Chuck, I enjoyed the adventure. Thanks for taking the time to post. Like you guys I think the KLR is a good all around ride. You've made me think about Utah after my next ride to Big Bend this April. Joe |

Nice ride report! I've been around many of the areas you detailed - in a truck, and not on my KLR... ...SOME DAY the KLR will get out on a ride like that - instead of just pounding the pavement between home and work! As for areas to hit up next time, make the loop between Torrey, east through Capitol Reef's main canyon to Notom Road, south down Notom Road to the Burr Trail switchbacks, up the switchbacks, across the mesa, and up Long Canyon to Boulder, then up / over Boulder Mountain back to Torrey. Excellent scenery along that loop! |

good times in Utah! Chuck- Thanks for taking the time to put together the great report of our trip to Utah. The trip was a great experience, it included some unique challenges that seem to be a necessary component of a true adventure. At least the hurdles were manageable, and we got home injury free. This ride was nearly 2 years in the making and we both gathered a great deal of information and tips from following this and the ADV forum, thanks to all who share their lessons learned! I am already looking forward to next year's trip back to Moab! |

We finally made it down into the canyon. For me, it was some rough riding. The road was riddled with rocks, sand and slick rock. It was pure work getting down to the canyon floor in one piece. But I did. I came around a corner to find Kevin picking his bike up after bashing the bottom on the rocks shown in the following picture. We took a break in the shade and discussed whether we should go further. After taking another look at the rocks that he'd hit, I had no objection to turning around. So we did. We could have stayed down in that canyon for days, it was that vast. It'll have to wait until next year. We made our way back up and out of the canyon and hit the road. We made it into Flagstaff Arizona and stayed at a KOA. It had showers. Nice. Day 6 - Flagstaff, Arizona To San Diego, California We got up early, broke camp, and had a quick breakfast of gas station coffee and energy bars, then hit the road. We rode the remaining way home. It was quite a long, hot, ride through the California desert. We rode about 2000 miles in 6 days. We had a few minor hiccups but both agreed that it added to the adventure. Both being prepared and flexible with our plans made for a stress free trip. It took me a few days to get readjusted to being home. Utah is a place that I could surely spend a good portion of my time and never get bored. Next year's trip back out will be even better. |

We made our way back into Moab for fuel. I noticed Kevin walking over to a fellow and started talking to him. He walked back over to me and said "I've got a road for us". We'd been looking for a nice dirt road and when he noticed that this dude worked for an off-road rental company, he figured he'd know of a good one. He was right. We soon found ourselves on Kane Creek and Kane Spring roads heading for Hurrah Pass. This turned out to be the most enjoyable part of the trip for me. We made it up to Hurrah Pass and I thought it'd be cool to get a photo from down in the canyon looking up at the pass. This is a Google Earth image of the road: |

We went in to town and found a Denny's for coffee and breakfast. We Decided to do some local riding before we start making our way back home. We made our way to Arches National Park and toured it until it started filling up. Some video: |

The Valley of The Gods. We stopped in Mexican Hat for fuel and a rest in some shade. Kevin really wanted to go to Moab, so we decided that we'd push through. I didn't realize that it was a huge playground for anything on wheels. My eyes were opened. We found a campground that was geared more towards mountain bikers. This late in the season, there weren't many there. A fellow from Kansas City along with his son was camping close to us. They invited us into their camp for a beer and conversation. It was a nice way to finish off the day. The views from our campsite were beautiful. Day 5 - Moab, Utah To Flagstaff, Arizona We woke up early and broke camp. The sunrise was spectacular. |

The Hite Crossing Bridge. Moki Dugway. This is a gravel road that drops about 1100 feet in three miles. It has a 10% grade with tight switchbacks with incredible views. The road was more than wide enough but I could not get the sheer drops out of my head. I rode it SLOW. Some video: |
