Yabbut... what kind of juice does the engine take?

The one consideration in all this which I have not been able to find anywhere is what kind of juice does the engine take? At, say, 5k RPM, what do the coils consume?

ScareCrow No, the bulbs are all plug and play. For the turn signals you'll need a solid state flasher. You can get them at any auto parts store. If you get a polarized LED light for the turn signal indicator you will not need to install a diode pair on the signal indicator light.

Here's a link describing the conversion for the turn signals. Scroll down to txrider, that's me, whe the thread comes up. This shows the diode conversion and a solid state flasher from superbrightleds. They have polarized LEDs that allow this to work without using the diode pair. They also have a heap big selectin of automotive LEDs and their prices are low.

shepherdklr Thanks for the message Scarecrow. That was something that I was thinking of doing but not with the brake and signal lights. What I was thinking of doing is getting a LED type drive light. So thanks for the smart idea. If I do change the stock lights to a L.E.D system, do I not have to change the stock wire harness some how?

ScareCrow That 36 watt number is bogus.

Kawasaki claims about 240 watts available power on the '08s. The pre 08s are about 180 watts. With both headlights (high beam) on that uses about 110 watts on the '08, I think high beam is 60 watts on the older models. The tail light is about 23 watts. Instrument lights are about 10 watts total. License plate light is about 10 watts. Those are the constant loads.

The turn signals are about 46 watts per side. The radiator fan motor is about 25 watts. Brake light is about 10 watts. Those are the surge loads.

I use the term "about" because the bulbs used in the bike may vary as much as 15% in power because of manufacturing differences between makers.

So an '08 when running down the road is using about 150-160 watts with the high beam on. When the turn signals come on that goes up to about 200 watts. And if the engine is hot when you go into that turn add another 25 watts when the radiator fan comes on to bring it up to 225 watts for the '08s and about 170 watts for the pre '08s with the high beam on.

The alternator is capable of handling most types of surges beyond its ratings with no problem, up to about 280 watts on the '08s and 210 watts on older ones.

Conversion to LEDs can save about 50 watts continuous (equivalent to a pair of heated gloves and vest) and surge loads for LED turn signals become negligible. I would highly recommend conversion to LEDs if you intend to add electrical accessories.

Power (in watts)= Voltage x amperage. So a '08 can supply 17 amps continuous power (240/14v=17 amps). 14 volts is the normal operating voltage. I forgot the horn..add about 5 watts surge for that.

I'm not incuding the electric starter in this because its primary source of power is the battery.

Hi every one. I think that I have been on this forum before but all my info was lost. I need to ask what I hope is not a hard question. I have found out through my research that the 08 KLR has an electrical output of 36 watts.

This is not my strong point and that rating to me, in some ways, may as well be 36 whats? I would like to install some drive lights on my bike, followed by heated grips and a vest hook up. I know there are allot of variables here so this is where I would like to start.

How much power is available on a stock system after the basic electrical system has been handled?
