cherokee_chuck There were a few of us that hit some trails that would have required the pass..........but mostly it wasn't needed. My haul rig had some oil pressure issues on the trip. Another group had problems with their ABS on their tow rig. As for motorcycles...........I don't think there was even a flat.........amazing!

We did have a couple of guys have to sleep overnight out on a trail and a crew come rescue them and their bikes the next day.

Hi guys,
I've really been anxiously anticipating an update from your Colorado trip.

Did any of you find and ride any single track motorcycle or narrow ATV routes which actually required the OHV sticker?

With 30+ riders total in your group I'm guessing that you all probably went out in '6-packs', instead of a full case at a time.

Hope that no one had any major mechanical issues or injuries?

pdwestman Cherokee_chuck,
If Colorado OHV system is like/similar to Wyoming the key is roads. All of those gold mine roads, forest service roads, BLM roads, county roads, city roads, state highways are open to all street legal and license plated vehicles. (motorcycle to semi-tractor, with length restrictions)

The narrow 50 inch and under OHV routes and trails for OHV's will require the CO OHV sticker regardless if said OHV's (motorcycles, atv's, side x side UTV's) have been license plated. Any cross-country open areas such as sand dunes would require an OHV sticker on all vehicles of any size, because that is Not on a road.

The person you talked to couldn't or wouldn't clarify because you might take your narrow motorcycle on a narrow OHV trail and they want all the funds they can muster for the program.

I could be miss-taken, of course.

cherokee_chuck Folks..........it's been since 2011 since I have ridden in Colorado. It looks like in 2014, Colorado requires OHV vehicles to purchase a decal to ride off-road.......whether street tagged or not. They are sold at WalMart among other places. Cost is $25.25 and you just need to show your drivers license. I contacted Colorado Parks and Wildlife and they said you need one for any off-road use. I asked what constituted Off-Road (Alpine Loop Roads, dirt roads to camping areas, etc.) but she didn't really know. She just said a decal cost less than a ticket.

If any of our Colorado folks can shed some more light on this, we are all ears.

cherokee_chuck I have blown this map up and plan on lamenting it to help with our morning meetings (8:30-9:00) at the Silverton Lakes Campground River Pavilion. Also, check out the 2nd link to purchase your own map of the area.

cherokee_chuck With just one week left, the excitement is ever increasing! I have worked on the KLX carb.......changing to a 140 main jet (145 was in it)......clip on the 2nd from top groove (was already on 2nd, but think when I get back to TN, will put it on 3rd).........fuel mixture at 3.0 turns out (was 3.5). I have done basic cleaning on carbs, but never made adjustments like this. Was actually a lot of fun learning......just hope my learning wasn't bad and I spend way too much time trying to get it right once in Silverton.

Speaking of which, my group will be getting to Silverton on Sunday afternoon, hopefully. Our plans are to unload and take a test run up to Kendall Mtn. (almost reaching it's 13,000 summit), to see how the carb setups are doing. It is the location where you can get a wonderful view of Silverton (was one of the pics at the beginning of this thread before Photobucket's changes).

Another thing.......I have reserved the pavilion beside Animas River at the tent sites. We can meet there between 8:30-9:00 to set up group rides, etc.

Getting close.............

cherokee_chuck In 2 weeks, we will be in Colorado! Hope your planning is going well. If anyone else would like to meet out there, it's not too late to plan it out, especially if you plan on tenting.

As you get your bike ready for the trip, you need to go ahead and set up your carb for elevations primarily between 8,000-14,000 ft. It doesn't matter if your bike is fuel injected, they still have some issues too. But, in 2011, my carbed KLR650 had some trouble over 12,000'.....and really had issues over the 13,000' passes.

If you haven't done it already, and are in a good size group, get some communication going with your members. Talk about spare parts sharing.....food plans.....double check your sleeping arrangements....all that jazz and more. In 2011, we were fortunate enough to have very little rain, though it wasn't terribly dry/dusty. Be prepared riding gear wise for anything, though. Also.......and probably most important...........get your bike ready NOW! There is a fine dealership in Durango, but you want to have the bike ready as much as possible before we go. My KLX just this past month wasted a rear hub bearing. Very glad it happened now. If you have parts like that in an old bike that hasn't been changed in a while, you may want to do some 'preventative maintenance'!

For the most part, we are staying at Silverton Lake Campground. The cabins are full, but there are tent sites going for $14/person (up from last year's rate of $12.50). I have a cabin, but will keep a tent reservation for any latecomers. If you are considering pretty strongly about gathering a group together, give the folks at Silverton Lake Campground a call and reserve a RV site or tent site. Other locations (Red Mountaing, etc) in Silverton are nice as well.

If you cannot find anyone to transport out west with, give a shout on this thread.......we can hopefully help you find a group to go with.

If you have a good feeling you can go on this trip, let's hear you!

I have given some thought to it. In 2011, it was just 7 of us.....so we normally just met over at the campsite (couple guys stayed in the hostel) and if we didn't already have it planned from the day before, we brought out the ole trusted map.

With around 30 of us going this time.....and maybe a few that live nearby.....we will probably be having times when we all go together, and other times when we go in smaller groups. There is so much to see in the 'Alpine Loop' area itself, but there are also many trails, etc outside of the loop. The map below can give everyone an idea of a majority of what's there in the 'Loop' area to ride. Some ATV and Motorcycle trails aren't on the map. Detailed maps are available for this area. I keep mine with me and the GPS does a great job too.

As for making a daily schedule for a majority of the days we are there, I don't know. Part of me wants to keep everything open and plan day by day........while other times I think folks would like to know what's on the itinerary in advance, so they can plan to go with or go elsewhere.

I believe at the very least we can meet at a specific location (thinking the Silverton Lakes Campground pavilion) between 8:30-9:30 to discuss the daily events and maybe even a tentative route for the following day. We could throw it on the forums as we plan it.
