Paper I bet it's been 15 years since I bought a helmet that I tried on first.. I know that HJC large helmets will fit my head the way it should.. Snug, but not uncomfortably tight.. I wear helmets for 2 years, and I buy a new helmet every year. I wear them back and forth for a week or so and once the foam starts to get compressed and the tight fit's gone, I cut the D-ring off and pitch the helmet.

In the last 15 years, I bought one HJC that didn't fit the way I wanted it to.. It was a cheaper version of HJC and it wasn't tight enough on the cheeks. I returned it to New Enough with no problems. I look at the $8 I spent to send it back nothing compared to all the money I've saved for years of internet ordered lids.

My current lids are an AC-12 El Diablo and a FS-15 Prism Black. Both purchased from New Enough on clearance.

Lockjaw Very true. Safety items are a MUCH easier sell.

flash Just plopped down $400 for a Shoei DS Hornet (had a 25 percent off coupon). Great fit and finish. Wish I could tell you how it is riding but it has not been above freezing here for several days (yeah yeah, I know I'm a wuss). I have two bikes and four helmets now, my wife asks why I need so many helmets? I ask why she needs so many shoes.....FAIL.

For me it is easier selling her on safety gear than things such as doohickeys, thermobobs, fork braces etc. and all the other farkles we seem to must have.

Lockjaw Which is about twice what I paid for the helmet incidentally.

Lockjaw Yeah, I tend to agree with you. Maybe I've just never experienced the bliss of a Shoei or whatever, but my current HJC is safe, fits well with customized cheek pads. Wind noise, I guess, but earplugs are cheap. Says the man who just bought $150 gloves.

You know what they say...."$10.00 helmet for a $10.00 head".

Seriously, as long as it has at least a DOT or Snell certification you should be good. I think getting one that fits YOUR head properly is key. Some helmet manufacturers have different thickness cheek / head pads available to fit to your melon.

Lockjaw I've heard two years, I've heard 2-4. I have only ever replaced a helmet because of impact once. Dropped that SOB from pretty high onto concrete. 5 years sounds good!

SLO-KLR FYI the guide for helmet replacement says every 5 years provided it hasn't been damaged.

Lockjaw After checking my finances (Karen had a stern talk with me) , I think I can get another year out of this helmet. I usually replace them every two years, the one I have now will go three I think.

I've gotten every helmet I've ever owned (MC helmet) through New Enough on sale. And practically all my gear period. This is the time of year for sure. Thanks for everyone's responses. I was dorking around looking at stuff on NewEnough last night before I checked myself. They have some good deals currently.
