DPelletier Good info, as always, from PD and GoMotor.....good to know there isn't a big battery draw at 1000 rpm's. I idle mine at 1200 over (clearly unfounded) concerns of battery discharge and possible lubrication issues at lower rpms (undoubtably also unfounded!).

Now that I think about it, my bike seldom idles anyhow; if it's cold and I'm warming it up, I have the enricher on and idle is over 1500....I tend to not let it idle long and then get on and ride fairly soon (30 - 60 seconds) in order to get it up to operating temperature more quickly.

I couldn't care less about the fuel I burn whilst idling, myself.

I agree with pdwestman that 1,200 is a good idle.

I like to run my 2011 gen2 at 1,000 just for the way it sounds. I may have to give it a little throttle while I back it out of the garage on cool mornings to keep it running, but once I roll out of the driveway it is fine.

Earlier today answered a riders question about battery drain at idle if he hot wired his radiator fan. I idled mine at 1,000 rpm with the fan on and the low beam headlight on. It was making 14.35 volts before the fan came on and actually went up a little when the fan came on.

I am not sure if there might be an oil pressure problem at low idle, but I have put many tens of thousands of miles on my two gen2s with no problems. pdwestman would know a lot more about oil pressures.

Wattman, that sells the Thermo-Bob even drops to 900 rpm to save gas.

Service manual calls for 1300 +/- 100.

Idling question

I was wondering what the ideal RPM should be under normal conditions at a sitting idle? I'm just a smidge over 1k and it seems OK but figured I'd ask anyway. Have a 2012 KLR with 4k on her.
