rickkd6 The cheap stuff. I also use rotella-t 15-40.

CheapBassTurd Lower octane fuel is fine. These KLR's have great (too great) cooling systems.
Pinging is something I haven't even read about on the site, let alone ever experienced.

The manual also recommends 10w-40 oil. Most of us go one weight heavier. (15w-40)
The main bearings on a thumper take a bit of a beating.

Enjoy your motorcycle to it funnest, and welcome to the site.

vatrader I have used 87 octane whenever it was available. I have found a number of these bikes that do not like high alcohol content ethanol / gasahol. Even E10 throws my bike into a full fledged tizzy.

Lockjaw I use 87 at whatever gas station happens to be near or cheapest and have never had any issues.

Newb... with an 09. Best Fuel??

What type of fuel is everyone using to get the smoothest performance out of your KLR? Brand? Octane?

P.S. I have read the manual for the fuel requirements...
