pdwestman You will need both the LEFT & the RIGHT Lower aluminum brackets to install a Gen 2 rack on your Gen 1 bike.
The mounting Locations on the bike are Identical.

Or you might could use a 'carrier deck' from like Happy Trails to get a longer/wider mounting surface on your Gen 1 brackets.

PackyOC 1st gen rack pn: 53029-1081
2nd gen rack pn:53029-0046 for upper part and 53029-0047 for lower part.

I guesss my question is are these parts interchangeable and do I need both parts from the gen 2 if I put it on the gen 1 or just the upper part. Thank you

Gen 2 rack on Gen 1

I bought one of those trunk tail bags for my '05 on Ebay. I didn't know it was for a gen 2 only. The rack on the back where you strap it down is different on the 2. My question is, does the gen 2 rack bolt to the gen 1 bike? That seems like a cheaper fix than buying a new storage option for my gen 1.
