Tom,

TrackMaker...ok.

Might be coming to the end of this little gps tale soon. I did donwload and convert to routes from tracks - successfully. Unfortuantely while playing with what would work I corrupted my device. I tried downloading tracks directly to the device from GPSBabel...it showed up under 'data' as 20-30 different routes...none of them could be downloaded but there is no way to delete them. I deleted GPSBabel and used the trackmaker - had no problem converting, saving, and viewing in mapsource. They were converted to routes. NOW - after all that - when I go to 'send to device' i get an error message saying my device software has been corrupted - call garmin. wtf...

anyway - im almost sure once i get that worked out i will be able to convert and use gps routes on my device. by the end of this week i will know and will hopefully be making my final post regarding this thread. thanks again for all the help tom.

Tom Schmitz OK, first off, I hope I haven't screwed you up. When I said GPS Tracker, I meant GPS TrackMaker. Hopefully you knew that and were humoring me...

In GPS Trackmaker, load a .gpx file that has the tracks you want to convert. You'll see your tracks on the screen - select one of them by double clicking on it. It should now have a whole bunch of points high-lighted on it.

From the menu, go to Tools>Tracklogs and Routes>Tracklog Reducer. Ehis will bring up a pop-up tool for making tracks use less points. Select "Create a Route" and select the number of points (vertexes) you want to use on the route (max is 210). Click on "Reduce", bada-bing, you have a route from the track file.

Save the .gpx file and load it into Mapsource. You can edit the route if you want or save it to the Nuvi.

BTW, I save all of my GPS data in one file called "Master.gpx" and save it straight to the Nuvi from Mapsource rather than use the Mapsource upload/download chingadera.

ridgerunner From GPSTracker...i opened a gpx file. i found where to convert it...file / convert - the prompts ask for a source folder and destination - obviously the source is the gpx file - my question is what do I convert it TOO? All I want is to convert too routes, all I see is where you can convert to a different file extension. is there a different option to convert to routes somewhere I'm not seeing?

I'm using the newest version of mapsource.

Tom Schmitz ridgerunner -

What version of Mapsource do you have?Is it the version that does autorouting, or an older one?

I have found that using the autorouting in Mapsource works out fine (as long as the road you want to go on is on your map).

I did convert all of my old tracks that I had collected with my emap into routes for the Nuvi, using GPSTracker. The only one I recall running into a problem with due to the number of points was a 70 mile track of the Bradshaw Trail. However, even that was OK, as once I had converted it to a route I loaded it back up in Mapsource and added some waypoints to it to get the precision back.

The Google route is a bit difficult, as the Google Earth files are in a funky format (.kml) that has to be converted. It so frustrated me that I gave up on it. It could be that, since then, converters have gotten more numersous and easier to deal with; maybe the latest GPSBabel will convert them.

ridgerunner Tom, correct me if I'm wrong. A route is better / easier to follow than a track. Tracks are made up of lots and lots of points - the nuvi is limited to a certain number of points. so, although the unit can import converted tracks (routes) - the track must be simplified so as to not exceed the amount of points the nuvi can recognize. i don't have enough experience with this stuff to know how many points an average track will contain. does this sound right?

if i can only import simplified routes (converted tracks) - is there a way to map using map source with a google earth overlay? or is that opening a whole new can of worms

either way, thanks again for the help. i will figure this out one way or another.

Tom Schmitz If you want to convert tracks into routes, I think the best way might be with GPSTracker. I can walk you through that process, if you like. The Tracker you can convert a track of as many points as you like into a route, and you can specify how refined the route will be in terms of the number of track points used.

The Nuvi will import routes, but not tracks. Deep in the GPS engine the tracks are there, but the software uses them only to display where you've been. If you download the 'current.gpx' file, I think the track may be there, so you can save it in Mapsource, play with it, convert it to a route, but you can't upload tracks back to the Nuvi. I've tried everything I can think of to get that done, with no joy.

ridgerunner if my nuvi500 does not import tracks / routes - i will be selling it.

from what i can tell - i just need to convert the waypoints / tracks to routes. as long as there aren't more waypoints than my device allows - im fine (even then it appears you can use a filter and be ok).

my next question - is anybody here fluent in GPSBabel or something similar. ive been playing with it for awhile and can't seem to figure out how to do the conversion. i have to be missing something here. whats the best way to make the conversion. or if anybody has a link to a blow by blow on how to do it that would be great.

thanks in advance for any help.

Tom Schmitz To cut straight to the chase, take a look at this post and see if it describes your issue.

The Nuvis won't/can't import tracks.
