DID chain didnt have orings... for $180 plus install i expected better, especially considered I babied that chain . I replaced it with some 520 oring chain (off the roll) from yamaha in whitehorse and its clearly better stuff... at $67, 1500 km on it now no adjustments required nothing more then a daily spritz of oil.
Thats right that whale is shooting a rainbow out its blow hole...
I made campbell river tonight, not much choice all the rooms in port hardy were booked and i didnt feel like setting up a tent at midnight on the beach.
All the gas stations north of Campbell river were closed to boot. i forgot to fuel in prince rupert so last fuel was kitawanga which was pretty green gas.... With my fuel jerry dumped in the tank, it took 22.3 litres when i filled up in campbell river... cutting it right close on the reserve, getting micro stalls from the crap gas the whole way. Almost had to poor the gas out of my camp stove in (extra .5 litres).
Couple days rest and install a new clutch on monday.

So took highway 37 from the yukon to prince rupert. Be on the ferry to vancouver island tomorrow ($374 for a bike and single rider)
Highway 37, narrow, narrow,poorly paved and more twists then an M. Night Shyamalan movie. Lots of fun, but gotta watch those campers coming wide on the corners.
No cell service the entire route... not much service from the establishments on route either... i finally found a place on earth that no gas station or store has 15-40 oil on the shelf, had to buy some off a trucker.
But the whole ride is damn pretty every lake looks like this
That final stretch though rainbow pass into prince rupert at points feels like a tunnel of lush green... opening up onto the ocean.
this route is an amazing drive and so far the best stretch next to the scagway highway.

The bridge at teslin is nearly 1km long, steel grating deck, you hit it to fast you dump, to slow you dump, tires to knobby you dump, too smooth you dump, try to adjust line you dump. It a motorcyclists nightmare made worse by tail gators that dont get you cant do more the 50-60 tops
Take some more and upload latter, went to skagway last night for dinner but failed to to photos lol. Had alaskan king crab in alaska.
The bike is back to burning oil which is disapointing.
I Had to replace the chain in whitehorse, apparently DID chains only last 5000km. at 5200km i could lift the chain off the rear sprocket in the middle of the bite. I was sitting on two links everything in between was hanging off the sprocket 1/8 of an inch lol. She'll make it but this might be its last long haul i think.

I rebuilt the motor with a 661 kit so it shouldn't be drinking oil...
No tubes, running tubeless radials. so goop and a tire pump.
ferry is only $200 with a bike, beats driving another 1500 KM to go the land route, then still need to take a pay $60 for a ferry lol.

Sounds like a blast. I've looked at that ferry ride myself but it's crazy expensive IMO, although I can't swim that far.
Don't recall your bike year but I believe it was 2008. Take a jug of oil and watch your level and RPM. The 17 tooth will help with that.

|samuel||Congrats on planning a big trip! Are you planning to bring tubes? Even if you don't plan to change your own tires in the event of a flat, having spare tubes means you can fix a flat at any regular tire store (or motorcycle shop that doesn't stock KLR sizes).|

Some life changes in the works. I'm parting ways with my job in edmonton, I'm taking one in whitehorse.
So the final thing i need to do is a weld test and the job is mine.
My house is already sold (i was going to be moving for work anyways, 3 hour commutes suck) so i got nothing tying me down, and I have enough equity coming back my way,I really don't need to work for 3-6 months if i didn't want to.
SO hey, I figure instead of just flying in, I'll ride my bike up, get the job (or not) then carry on to the coast, catch the 18 hour ferry to the island then go see some friends and family. make a vacation of it since i haven't had one of those in years....
Plan is to leave a few days after my last day at my current job... after i pack up the house and put most of it in storage.
few last thing to do to the bike,
swap the 16 tooth for a 17 tooth, double check the valves (again, this ticking from the head makes me paranoid, even though half of all KLRs seem to have it) change the oil,
and top up the fluids as required.
big the first really big trip with a bike (currently 500 km is the furthest i've gone in a day)
I have a spare clutch cable wired up, spare oil filter and gasket maker, couple of spare bolts and enough tools to tear the engine down (I made it a challenge when I rebuilt the motor this last winter)
Anything else I should bring?
