getting a title

I recently bought an 04 KLR 650 with less than 4K on the clock. It was an Ebay purchase and I did not get a title, but I got a bill of sale, and the paper work where the guy I bought it from bought it at a government auction. I was going to part it out, but I have been thinking about trying to get the title for it and riding it or selling it (after I get it titled).

The guy I bought it from did a carfax title search and found it was involved in an accident, back in Aug 04 in VA. He was told that he would get the title from the auction company, (but they got their money and forgot about him) So all he got was the run around.

He gave me all the paper work he had on the bike from the auction.

I goggled the vin number and found where the bike was listed in the auction, and where it was listed on Ebay.

I plan on asking a local LEO to run the vin for me to see if I can find the original owner in hope of obtaining the title from them. If that is unsecessfull I will apply for a title through a mechanics lien.

My question to you all is, 1) have you ever done this? (mechanics lien) 2) do you know of a better way to get a title?

With the COLD weather we are having riding is on hold for me and tracking down a title will give me something motorcycle related to do.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life.

Joe, I rebuilt a Honda Accord several years ago, but of course I started with a salvage title. THE FIRST place I would start is at the County Court Clerks office, the place you get your tags for the car. This office should know anything that you will need, or at least where to start. You may have to apply for a salvage title, then all you do is repair it, take it and have the Sheriffs office inspect it, then drop an application in the mail to the state for a true title. It would NOT hurt to take pictures of what it looked like when you started, and BE SURE and hold on to ANY receipt you have from an expence they will want documentain to look at to prove you DID repair the bike. If the clerk's office won't help you let me know, and I will talk to our clerk, she's a friend of mine. I hope this helps.

Thanks Danny, I plan on seaking out the assistance of the clerks office, but I didn't vote for them, and campained aginst them, so I'm not sure how much help they will be. I won't know until I try tomorrow.

I want a friend to run the vin before I start, I'll do that this afternoon, and then tomorrow I'll seak out the clerks office, I'll let you know what I come up with tomorrow.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life.
