deer/motorcycle accident

Well, i haven't posted in awhile but i thought i'd share this with all of you. it relates directly to wearing our riding gear and how it can literally save your hide, i'm typing left handed so bear with the lack of proper puncuation and caps.

on june 8th, on my return trip from my adventure ride to moab, utah for the cmc, i was 98 miles from home when bambi decided it was time to run across 4 lanes of traffic and like a missle, homed in on me. bambi, being an effective anti-bike missle, impacted on my left nerf bar, taking out the front wheel and spun into the side of me. I did manage to slow down from 85mph to an impact speed of 60mph. i laid the klr down on the interstate at 60mph.

i was wearing all my gear, helmet, gloves, jacket, pants and mx boots. i feel if i hadnt worn my mx boots, i may have broken my leg. i slid on the pavement for maybe 15 seconds coming to rest on the shoulder of the road. after doing the required head, knees and nuts check, i realized iwasnt banged up too badly took the gloves and helmet off and tried to flag a car down [was more worried about getting squashed by acar really] of course a car behind me saw the whole thing and stopped. i was in the er in olean ny within 20 minutes of lowsiding. the only injury i really had was to my right hand, possibly due to bambi hitting the front wheel and wrenching the bars full lock to the right. a compound fracture to my right thumb, which explained all the blood and pain. as for road rash, 2 quarter sized spots on my left elbow , bruised ribs and a bruise on my right shoulder and elbow. the xrays showed the long bone in the right thumb broken in 5 places, not bad for a bone only 2 inches long.

my riding gear is trashed, but i dont need 6 months worth of skin grafts like many squids that go down. sure, it could have been a worse outcome, they could be putting me in the ground now, i was lucky, i was wearing all my gear and i could have walked away from it and pain killers are my new best friend.

the bike did better than expected, the nerf bars did a great job, the radiator and fan are toast, but the rad didnt rupture and the tank isnt banged up to bad, just a bent mounting tab for the left rad shroud and my forks are tweaked, but i think loosening the pinch bolts will let them straighten out.

other than taking the vicadin a few times a day i'm fine, got another appointment with the orthopaedic surgeon in the morning for more xrays and a new cast, i'm thinking a teddybear cast would be a nice touch for the humor of it

ride on all, see you next summer when i can ride again

Bambi can reek such havoc. Am glad you came out in relative terms, unscathed. As you said, could have been much worse at those speeds.

Dang gunny, it isn't deer season yet, and bambi should have known KLR season is over too.

Glad your fairing as well as you are, even with ATGATT, it could have been a lot worse. I hope the thumb heals quick.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life.

Deer Whistles . . .

This is why I have deer whistles attached under my head light under the fairing on either side. I chose black to match my ride.

You may have to click on the picture to enlarge it to see the deer whistles.

Safe riding.

Yep, going out this morning and finding me some deer whistles. I don't know if they actually work, but every little bit of help is wanted to keep them from trying to bag my KLR as a trophy.

save your money, deer whistles dont work, and if they do, its in reverse, my dad never hit a deer until after he spent the $10 on those things. I read somplace that those whistles are kinda like that "magic pill" that increases your fuel mileage.sounds good, but when pressed for actual test data, it just doesn't exist. the best defense is a good offense, slow down, be more observant and wear all your gear in bambi country.

when you guys plan on heading up this way, shoot me a pm and i'll have steaks waiting.

Do Deer Whistles Work?

Greetings!

It would appear that the Gunny maybe right. I've checked several educational sites and most say they do not appear to work while a few state that it is possible.

Here is one sight that feels the evidence does not support that deer whistles work: http://cru.cahe.wsu.edu/CEPublicatio...77/eb1677.html .

Thanks for your input Gunny!

Regards
