Well, i haven't posted in awhile but i thought i'd share this with all of you. it relates directly to wearing our riding gear and how it can literally save your hide, i'm typing left handed so bear with the lack of proper puncuation and caps.
on june 8th, on my return trip from my adventure ride to moab, utah for the cmc, i was 98 miles from home when bambi decided it was time to run across 4 lanes of traffic and like a missle, homed in on me. bambi, being an effective anti-bike missle, impacted on my left nerf bar, taking out the front wheel and spun into the side of me. I did manage to slow down from 85mph to an impact speed of 60mph. i laid the klr down on the interstate at 60mph.
i was wearing all my gear, helmet, gloves, jacket, pants and mx boots. i feel if i hadnt worn my mx boots, i may have broken my leg. i slid on the pavement for maybe 15 seconds coming to rest on the shoulder of the road. after doing the required head, knees and nuts check, i realized iwasnt banged up too badly took the gloves and helmet off and tried to flag a car down [was more worried about getting squashed by acar really] of course a car behind me saw the whole thing and stopped. i was in the er in olean ny within 20 minutes of lowsiding. the only injury i really had was to my right hand, possibly due to bambi hitting the front wheel and wrenching the bars full lock to the right. a compound fracture to my right thumb, which explained all the blood and pain. as for road rash, 2 quarter sized spots on my left elbow , bruised ribs and a bruise on my right shoulder and elbow. the xrays showed the long bone in the right thumb broken in 5 places, not bad for a bone only 2 inches long.
my riding gear is trashed, but i dont need 6 months worth of skin grafts like many squids that go down. sure, it could have been a worse outcome, they could be putting me in the ground now, i was lucky, i was wearing all my gear and i could have walked away from it and pain killers are my new best friend.
the bike did better than expected, the nerf bars did a great job, the radiator and fan are toast, but the rad didnt rupture and the tank isnt banged up to bad, just a bent mounting tab for the left rad shroud and my forks are tweaked, but i think loosening the pinch bolts will let them straighten out.
other than taking the vicadin a few times a day i'm fine, got another appointment with the orthopaedic surgeon in the morning for more xrays and a new cast, i'm thinking a teddybear cast would be a nice touch for the humor of it
ride on all, see you next summer when i can ride again
