Close Call

We are/were staying at the Romona Canyon RV Resort between Romona and Julian CA. This AM we rode the KLR to Julian to meet up with Eagle Mike. After we met at Buddy's garage a fire started in Pine something, they closed off the road we had just came up on (78).
we didn't think a lot about it until we circled around to Romona where we found the road closed there. Now the road was closed above and below where we had the rig parked.
CHP would not let me through to get the rig, or Marcia's bird. They sent me to the local high school where I was sent to the fire department, where the animal control people was. I explained the situation to animal control only to find they wouldn't let me volunteer to go with a lady officer who was going near our rig to rescue a couple other birds and they were taking a guy to check on his camels.
After running around town from the road block to the shelter to the fire department, back to the cafe where eagle Mike, Geneva and Marcia were waiting, Mike offered us a place to stay with him, but I wanted to try some more to get the rig and the bird.
Marcia and I rode back to the road block and was turned away again by CHP. Marcia told the CHP officer she was going to start out walking to save her bird. (what a lucky bird).
Somewhere the BRIGHT ideal was brought up to push the bike past the roadblock to the gas station that was about 100 yards past the roadblock. Well everyone knows what happened once we were past CHP and the road block.
We took off,, passed several fire turcks comming down the mtn as we were headed up to the resort. We also passed one cop that turned on his overhead flasing lights, but by then we were almost to the resort. We pulled into the resort to find one firetruck blocking the entrance, so being on the KLR we went past the spikes that prevent cars or rvs from entering the exit side.
As we pulled up to the rig we could see the flames and the red glowing from the fire just over the hill. Marcia jumped in the rig and brought the slide in and raised the jacks as I was disconnecting the water, sewer, electric, and our satalite dish. (A knife does that stuff quick, but makes it hard to reconnet).
The bird was OK but the RV had filled with smoke already, I fired up the big V-10 and took off, it was a bumpy ride getting out of the park, but once we hit 78 we knew everything was going to be ok.

That is until we got back to town, we wasn't harrased going through the roadblock comming from the fire like we was going towards the fire, but we realized we had left the cell phones on the KLR, and we left the KLR, SS, and the trailer sitting in the resort.
OH WELL, I am due for a new phone, and if the KLR and SS don't survive the fire I will be sporting around on an 08 BLUE KLR real soon.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life.

We are sitting in Escondido in front of the Ralph's Store now. I had to get out of the smoke that had covered Romona already.
We are fine and the bird is fine, and the bikes and trailer can be replaced if need be.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life.

Yes if we had not done that I think eagle Mike would have had a couple house guests until we found another RV.

I may be looking for a new KLR tomorrow.

Glad to hear everyone made it out of there.. Scary to think that you could have lost the RV and pet!!

It must have been bad to be forced to leave the trailer and bikes, but when it comes to personal safety, the other stuff can always be replaced.

Oh, and WE WANT PHOTOS!!

I'm hoping the bikes and stuff are fine, but if not, you'll need pics for insurance anyway..

A buddy of mine had his Guzzi sidecar rig burn right down into the road after it developed a gas line leak, which caught on fire. Of course it was right at the entrance to a Guzzi rally, so everyone got to see it on the way in.

Again, glad to see your post, which means you're all safe!

Hang in there friend, the "Big Guy" will take care of ya NO MATTER what happens, and I know you two already know that. I am thankful that this didn't happen in the middle of the night, that could have been real bad! Let us know how it all turns out.

About the pics,,, both cameras were left on the KLR, the "witch creek" fire is the one that we were in. When we fired the gen this AM to check I see 8 different fires are going now.
We are headed to Aguanga the pick up my meds that my brother mailed to us, then we are going east to try to get on the other side of the winds.
These fires are being pushed by HIGH WINDS, the wind is blowing the rv so much it is like we are in a boat on the water.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life.
