Close calls and or accidents

I think it is always good to read stories of others close calls and or accidents so that we can all learn from the situation. So, feel free to tell us of any situations you have been in that you considered a close call or an actual accident while on your bike. Good weather is just around the corner and this might help us get out of the winter funk that has made our minds numb and be thinking of safety and what could happen once we hit the roads again.

Previous ride was a 2007 KLR Black/Silver, I miss it..
Looking to get back into KLR's sometime soon.

I've had 4 incidents.

First ever incident was on my first Ninja 500 learning bike. Was coming home and a lady in the oncoming lane had her left turn signal on and approaching the same intersection I was. The signal went off as she got even closer to the intersection. I still made the assumption that she was turning and backed off, but as she reached the intersection she wasn't turning, but going rather slow. I kept going keeping an eye on here figuring she did see me though and was waiting for me to clear. As I got right to the intersection, she turns immediately in front of me. I hit the brakes instantly since I was ready for that exact scenario, but I still came within inches of her truck. I could reach out and touch the truck. She freaked out and stopped completely. I asked her "Will you please F'in move now since you were in such a god damn hurry a second a go". She apologized almost in tears and then I told her "Just pay attention next time please" and we both went our own way.

Was teaching a friends girl how to ride the Ninja. She was going to buy it from me and learn herself. Mind you, she has been around bikes for about 5 years. Rode on the back of her boyfriends for a loooong time! I was going to upgrade after learning for a year. Typical BS!!! She didn't want her boyfriend teaching her, he would get frustrated. So I sit on the back with her in front and tell her not to touch the throttle, just let the clutch out ever so slowly until it grabs then pull it back in. I was just going on the back during this part, we weren't going more then 10 feet.. well, she apparently hears... "hit the throttle and let the clutch out immediately"... the bike goes straight up we go straight back. Totaled the bike after it goes sliding for 30' or whatever. UNREAL!! I only blame myself... NOT!!!!!!

After that I had the Sabre 1100. Was traveling with 2 vettes leading the way, came around a long blind corner and Brian had stopped when a dog ran out in front of him that the first vette had spooked. No leash and walking with the owners. The owners were in the oncoming lane chasing the dog so I couldn't escape there so I started skidding and had to make the choice to let off the brakes and aim for the right side ditch instead of slamming in to the back of the vette. Hit the ditch, right handgrip nails tree, sends me up and over the bike in a somersault finally landing straight down on my back in the ditch. The bike was just about to flip over forward and on top of me when it finally fell back the other way. I walked away with a leg scratch and sore muscles.

Now I have the KLR. Was heading to LBL one morning and was traveling on a 55mph highway. I had maybe 6 seconds between me and the car. Without any visual indication, no tail lights, no turn signal, the car was slowing down in a typical way for normal highway driving expectations. I didn't suspect anything except normal speed variation until I started catching up with him so I lose 3 seconds and then another second or so before he decides to stop really fast within like a 20' distance and still has no turn signal or brake lights. Now I'm looking for an escape route. I knew no cars were coming in the oncoming lane so I started to head for the parking lot across the street. All of sudden, jerk off turns in to the same parking lot. No turn signal ever.. still no brake lights! We sideswipe 30' in to the parking lot. I don't go down and I park the bike and ask him WTF was all that about and he says "Yeah, sorry man I didn't give any warning at all". Well, I'm in a hick town and just hit a local boy, so I'm at fault no matter what is said or what had happened and no cop is going to decipher what the hell just happened. I see no reason to call the cops and give my insurance card and continue on my way. He agreed, but later called the cops, probably his cousin. No biggy, I fully expected to be guilty and he got $1,300 to fix his POS! Didn't hurt the bike, just messed up my after market front pegs. All I can figure is he had a stick shift and was down shifting to stop. He was just a young moron who apparently had no clue that down shifting does not make the brake lights come on and when on a damn highway at 55 mph, you don't do crap like that. Signal you little doofus!!!!!

Makes me wonder why I continue to ride! I'm never without a helmet, but gear varies. You'd think I'd be wearing full leathers by now with 3 free passes.

I've been lucky, I've only had one accident on the road (falling in the dirt doesn't count).

June 15, 2006 6:00 am cruising up the highway to work at about 65mph no one directly behind me and about 10 seconds behind the cars in front of me. Traffic starts to slow I tap the brakes and the the next thing I know I'm skidding down the pavement. And it hurt like hell! I have no idea what happened. Either somone moved over into the rear tire or there was something in the road that caused the front tire to slide out. It happened so stinking fast that my brain couldn't process the info.

The damage:
Broken ribs 1, 3 cracked in the back on the right side, sprang right wrist, sprang left ankle, Bruised both hips, right toe, right hand, liver, right shoulder, road rash on both elbows (yes I had my jacket on) on my right wrist, left hand (gloves were on), both hips (very minor), and my right knee down my chin.
My helmet, jacket, gloves, jeans, and backpack were a loss. My laptop was scrached up but fine.

When we went to pick up the bike from the impound we found antifreeze on the tires. All the damage from the wreck was on the right side, and all the damage the wrecker caused was on the left side. The wrecker and caused more damage then the accident had.
