TCM's, "Noiralley:"

"The Asphalt Jungle."

Sterling Hayden, Sam Jaffe (academy award nominee, I think), and . . . in a minor role (as if she EVER had a minor role) Marilyn Monroe.

Directed by John Huston. Maybe the FIRST of a following sequence of, "heist," films. Some directorial tricks as in Huston's earlier, "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre." (Bogart's in that one, Tom! )

“You better put down that gun. You got two ways to go, put it down or use it. Even if you tie me, you’re gonna be dead.” "John Russell" (Paul Newman), Hombre

Alas, I've been working on Sundays so have been missing Noir Alley lately as I can't stay up late enough to watch the Saturday night version.

I would recommend the original Gary Cooper High Noon, featuring a young Lee Van Cleef in his only movie role where he never speaks a single word.

Bookwise, Martin Caidin's Black Thursday detailing the October 1943 8th Air Force B-17 raid on the Schweinfurt ball bearing plants is an excellent read.

The famous line about badges that is in Sierra is better in the book.

Bookwise, I have now finished everything that Raymond Chandler had ever written that I could find (there were a few pieces that I had missed outside of his major work), I think everything that Dashiell Hammett wrote, though I cannot be absolutely sure, and all of Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer.

Chandler and Marlowe are the best and it is sad, once you've read everything Chandler wrote, to realize that's it. That's all there is. There will never be more and there should have been. There are things written in his name, there is at least one unfinished novel that someone else finished, but it's not the same.

It's like when Stieg Larsson died so young. There will never be any more real Lisbeth Salander and there should have been. The best Lisbeth Salander was Noomi Rapace in the 2009 Swedish film "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo". It was so much better than the American version. Watch it in the original Swedish with subtitles.

“I lit a cigarette and dragged a smoking stand beside the chair. The minutes went by on tiptoe, with their fingers to their lips.” -Philip Marlowe

“'Why' and 'How' are words so important they cannot be too often used.” -Napoleon Bonaparte

Just watched it tonight: The WW1 documentary They Shall Not Grow Old is fantastic and unlike anything I've ever seen. Highly recommended.

"That Mickey Spillane - he sure can write!" (q.v., "Marty.")

Been there, done that (I think!). Anyhow, saw a flick so-named; was SURPRISED when no mention was made of the film for the Oscars (or any other award I know of). Why might the art have been considered? Most innovative plot; sort of reversing man-and-woman roles (macho-wise); plus . . . the BEST of any BURNING MAN scene I have EVER seen!

And, in this movie . . . The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo rode a MOTORCYCLE; dirt bike or dual-sport!

Few song selections for discriminating listeners:

Whiskey. Never had a drink of any of it I ever cared for, but the whiskey vibe is strong in this Johnny Lee Classic from "Urban Cowboy."

I always just liked the sound of this song playing on the radio when I was a kid, but I now realize the lyrics "I got my angel raising kids, I'm raising hell just like I did, I got a lot of crazy friends, and they forgive me of my sins" is pure genius.

I'm a huge fan of Funk music. This is a great blend of funk and rock. Note the guy in the bottom corner of the album cover looks exactly like Luke Wilson from Idiocracy and Old School:

This ain't no Mudd Club,or CBGB: I think this is the best version of this song:

Kim Carnes. What can you say? Cute as a button, great voice, yes, better version than Smokey Robinson's. Sorry, Smokey."

"Well I got my pills to ease my pain, ain't worried 'bout the sunshine or the rain" Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues. Classic JLL.
