I just bought another project....augh!!!!

Well I finally did it, I bought another bike to start a new project....it's a 1978 CX500, with a spare everything that can fit in a few boxes, even a complete engine.

I like the shape and design of the engine and that it's shaftdrive too.

The reason I bought it is....I want to make myself a reverse trike with the engine out front with me sitting behind the engine not above it like the Spyder is. Then back to a shaftdrive rearend. It will require a complete teardown to check everything out internally seeing as I'm just interested in the heart of the beast, plus swingarm assembly and both wheels.

What have I done? When the better half finds out what I have done I'll be sleeping in the garage .....but that's not a bad thing.....it is carpeted.....lol.

So....who knows what about these bikes.....I'm all ears......

Hey Willy's!
I had a 78 CX500 Custom when I was a young lad . It was a good bike but you really have to check out the cam chain tensioner system and guides... They were very prone to failure. Mine was a pretty low mileage bike and the cam chain piled up and broke the tensioner shortly after I bought it. Major league bummer! I did get it fixed up though and then put quite a few miles on it until I sold it to my unc. I too loved the shaft drive... I find chains to be a PITA

Here's a link with some info about the CX's trouble spots http://www.motomucci.com/2012/03/aft...on-issues.html

Thanks Stew....I know it has been changed once already but if they say those low of numbers I will be in need again. Once I get it out and on the bench I will know more about it. It was supposed to be a good runner before he stopped riding it during the summer. I will be looking for a piston kit and all parts that are known to be an issue. I am a person who fixes everything at once and starts with a fresh slate. I see no sense in starting a project and not doing it correctly from the get go. I'll build the main machine and then go after the engine rebuilding.....just to make sure it all fits and works well before spending some serious money on engine parts. I already have a boat anchor....lol.
