F650ST Shock and Awe

Had a brilliant ride last weekend with a friend along a 57-mile stretch of dirt north of Chico called Ponderosa Way. Video later.

When we got to pavement, my friend put her F650ST up on the centerstand to give the chain some oil, and interestingly the rear wheel stayed on the ground.

Here's the interesting bits, after she disassembled the rear suspension:

The shock had wedged itself forward of the lever, so the spring was effectively working, but dampening was only working one direction. It's notable that she (with 40,000 miles experience on this bike and lots of off road) didn't notice a handling difference... but that could have been due to this being a pretty low-speed road.

I have three questions.

1. Why would BMW make these tabs, as shown broken, above, out of aluminum? The weight savings seems minimal, and I'd imagine steel to be a much better performer.

2. New shocks cost more than my first car. Do you guys have recommendations for used shocks?

3. What happened here? Anyone feel like doing some forensics work?

Here's a breakdown of the assembly:

Here's what a normal lever looks like, of course:

Note that my friend's bearing is gone. On the KLR aren't they an interference fit? How would that have gotten out?

The bolt threaded directly into the hole in the now-missing tab. So either the tab broke, then the bolt came out... or the bolt came out, then the tab pranged against the lever and came off. But where are the bearings?

Her current plan is to buy a used shock and lever and be done with it, but I'm still curious if you learned folks have any other options, opinions, jokes, etc.
