Honestly, I think you'll have a blast with that. I had a 2012 650 with the oem side bags and really enjoyed it. At the time the 1000 was only available over seas. It was every bit as comfortable as the KLR. I can't speak for the 1000, but the 650 really ran circles around our single. The front tire would easily come up in first with zero clutch. If that handles anywhere near as nice as the 650 did, then your in for a huge fun factor. Mine handled the street as well as my ZX6R did. In fact it was more confidence inspiring through the curves than the twitchy Ninja was (I'm sure suspension settings could have played a role). The seating position, inverted front forks, and long suspension travel really just absorbed anything the road threw at it. I hope it works out for ya.
