Farewell to my GoldWing

My 2008 GoldWing has been seeing very little use for the last couple years. Last year, it was ridden the least of 5 bikes, and that includes the VFR and the FZ6, both of which I only owned for half the season.

It's a wonderful bike, but since I'm a ATGATT rider, it's pretty darned hot behind that barn door of a fairing.

Well, I got a really good deal on it when I bought it, and after 3 years and 12K miles, it's still worth what I have in it. It's a lot of money for something to sit in the garage and depreciate and collect dust..

Made the mistake of stopping at a favorite dealership yesterday.. Bikes were discussed, as was money.. I think there's going to be a change in bikes coming up in the next couple months.

More to follow..

Your going to miss the old couch. What is on your mind for a new bike?

Actually, I'll miss the Cruise Control and the excellent Stereo. I won't miss the heat when riding in temps above 75 degrees, though.

I'm 99% sure I'm going to order one of these.. None are available right now, but they'll be brought in by the first of Feb.

Last GS I owned was the one I ordered in 1992.. Loved the bike, hated going through rear tires every 2000 miles.. As we all know, the new radials out there are good for many more miles than that..

Still thinking, though..

There's the problem. I already spent the money. It's currently in the form of a black 2008 GoldWing that I don't ride. For the price of a used KLR, I can turn it into a bike I'd actually ride.

Farewell to your Goldwing

I can relate to your situation. I currently have three bikes, a 2002 Illusion Blue Goldwing (ABS) with 86k, a 2003 BMW R1150RT with 60k and a 2004 KLR650 (my second) with 30k.

Although I try to rotate and ride all three commuting my 40 miles each way to work, I find the KLR is the most fun of the three. Only drawback is lack of wind protection to thwart the brisk wind/air this time of year. Perhaps a larger windshield or heated grips (with addition of more powerful Stator) will be a future purchase. Thank goodness for my heated jacket liner.

I had a 2007 KLR a couple years ago but I had a "Moment" and traded it in for the Beemer. My wife commented that I'd kick myself down the road as we both enjoyed dirt-donking around the Southern California Deserts. Sure enough, I had to get another Enduro. Fortunately, my Beemer dealer called and said he had this 2004 that was clean/well-maintained. So it now resides next to the Beemer and Wing.

My brother has a sweet Beemer R1150GS but my Kawi runs circles around it when we dirt-donk together. I love the GS platform though and if there ever was a great All-Purpose bike, the GS is it!

As you're comtemplating, I am considering selling off the Wing but I just know the wife wouldn't dig that scenario. We pull our 1990 Kwik-Kamp pop-up tent trailer behind the Wing for our week-end get-aways too. We bought it with 30k miles, been cross-country several times (Wing Ding Rallys) and just turned 86k miles.

Keep it between the ditches, Ride Safe and Happy New Year's.

Thanks for the encouragement. I love the Wing, but never ride it. If my fiance would have time to just go on one week of vacation with me, I'd save it for that week, but she's swamped with her business, kids, dogs, house, etc..

I really wanted to do 2 weeks out in Colorado and Utah on the KLR, but was dreading the ride out there on it.. The GSA will cover all the bases of this and my numerous trips to the U.P. of Michigan.

Since I ride the KLR to work and for a lot of weekend day trips, I can't (won't) sell it. I have it set as I like it, anyway..

I can see my FZ6 possibly going down the road.. Dunno.. It's fun, but it really doesn't do anything the GSA wouldn't do..

Time will tell.

Put the KLR on a trailer and pull it with the wing to Colorado - problem solved.
I own an older couch and I plan to pull my KLR with it to a few places. Slab riding the KLR sucks - the wing loves it and can handle the load.

A small harbor fright trailer would do it with a few very minor modifications.

I dunno.. I've stayed away from a trailer hitch on the Wing because I've always said if I need to tow something with a bike, I'll take a car.

The only thing that would make the trip livable is the Russell Day Long seat on my KLR.

I've got time to weigh my options, since a GSA isn't even available until well into February.
