1984 KLR600 Supermoto?

Hi Guys,

I'm new to the site, so this will be my first post. I have asked this question a few times at other places but so far nobody has been able to help me properly. I'm interested in the 'Supermoto' look, with the 17 Inch wheels and everything. I was wondering, is it possible to Install these 17 Inch / Road Bike wheels onto my KLR? I understand that I have to find some where the rear wheel has a drum brake and the front has disc, and the calliper mount has to be in the same place, and other things such as spindle length / height & spacers etc? I was looking at the Kawasaki ER5 (1996), as it has the same brake set-up. Does anybody know or think that these will fit? Or is it more likely that I will have to do some modifications? I also noticed that the earlier models of the Kawasaki GPZ500 (1990 etc) has the same brake set-up, but not sure on how to go about this. Any answers will be greatly appreciated, Thank You.

I just did a KXf front fork swap onto my '03 KLR. I ran into a problem using the KLR front wheel in the KXf forks. The axel was different, the brake rotor would not line up with the caliper, the KLR hub was too wide for the KXf forks. These are just some issues you may run into doing a wheel swap. I ended up using a KXf wheel. It has no speedometer cable drive. That means using an aftermarket instrumentation cluster.
The less complicated way to go would be to have 17" rims laced onto the original hubs. Google mororcycle rims and go from there.

Thanks very much for the help Jeff, I have heard that lacing the hubs to 17" rims may be the easiest option as not even Kawasaki themselves knew if any different wheels would fit, I'll have to look into it deeper. Thank You for the help, much appreciated!

Welcome to the site and I too agree that having 17" rims laced to the stock hubs is by far the easiest way to get what you want done. There are some very expensive rims and then some good rims to choose from. You also can change the width slightly if that interests you also. I have a bike in my shop at the moment with some very beautifull Excell rims on it. Stunning with Continental Attack rubber, it has the possibilities of sticking to the road like glue IMHO with his set up. Although, this set up isn't cheap!

i would relace the the front . does the rear not have a 17 ? i saw someone who swapped a complete klr650 rear swing arm onto a 600 , you get the disk brake and the 17 rim .

Thanks for the suggestions guys, and sorry for the late reply. I'm just waiting for a split link so I've not been able to ride the bike for about a week now..It's killing me, especially now we are having all this sun! Ah yes the rear is a 17 as far as I know, it looks stock anyway. Thanks for the welcomes :-)

Welcome to the forum. + 1 on having a 17" rim laced to your hub. Here's a link to Woody's in Denver, CO that does excellent work. Used them to do the rims on my dragbikes years ago.
