klr 600 aftermarket valve shims

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all ur replies on my thread about stripped head bolt holes,

figured I'd start a new one for valve shims!

so...

anyone know of a good distributor of aftermarket shims that will fit the KLR600 in the UK?

any disadvantage to using aftermarket shims?

Also the previous owner must have put the shims in the wrong way so they have lost their numbers. I measured them using a digital calipre which i tested on my you know those thing you check the valve clearances with and they seemed accurat to within.02 mm is this accurate enough?

there was one shim that had it's number on that i checked with my calipers and it was way out! like .4 mm or something, (will post those measurements when i get home tonight) just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on an explanation

checked it and it was meant 2.45 and it was 2.38

I always mic my shims before installing them. Some times the guy in China gets it wrong.


Don't know about shims in the UK but could recommend a place in Canada. Not necessary to get them from the dealer. They charge too much anyway. The shims are 29mm in diameter. Some BMW's use the same size so you could also try there.

Digital calipers are not accurate enough. Depending on how tight you push on them the measurement can EASILY vary .002" to.003". Being that the shims come in .002"/ .05mm increments it would be easy to get it wrong. A micrometer is a better measuring tool and is much more accurate. Digital micrometers are much cheaper than the used to be . You should be able to get one from a less expensive tool distributor for around $50 US. If you can find a friendly machinist, you might get him/her to measure them up for you for free. Email them to me and I will do it for you!!

Jeff. You did say "friendly machinist"!

I agree though. I have a vernier calliper but always reach for the micrometer first and especially if I want it accurate. That's the friendly millwright in me.

Shims from 70's and 80's Kawasaki 900's and 1000's will work also.
