Tire(d) Thread

I'm wondering about your experiences with different tires on KLR jr.

When I bought my KLR 250 (way used), it had (way worn) knobbies on it and the front was hard and dry-cracked. Needless to say it wasn't confidence-inspiring in the corners at higher speeds.

I spent a lot of time researching different tires and knew I wanted a 50/50 style (even though I really ride about 80-90% on-road).

I went with an IRC-GP1 in the back and a Shinko 244 in the front and couldn't be happier! Smooth ride, quiet, and excellent grip on road, water, and gravel. I haven't yet had the opportunity to test them in other conditions.

Reviews of the Shinko 244 are mixed, but all complaints seem to be on the rear, with missing lugs and quick treadwear. Reviews of the front seem all good.

If I have any problems I'll surely update. But I'm curious what kind of tires and riding you all do.

I have experiance with the Avon Gripsters 80/20 on/off road tires. These were very smooth and stable. Recently, I have switched to the Pirelli
MT 21, these are 50/50 on/off road tires. These are amazing, at this point I have just over 900 miles on road, 140 miles off road. They are smooth on the road, but do have a knobby feel at low speed. They do not stop well on the road, but perform very well on the dirt. The on road wear seems to be slow and even, the off road wear is minimal. the large sharp rocks did no noticeable damage. I will have a better idea after the 1700 mile Tri State ride.

i can say this about 244's the rear does wear in high speed hwy conditions but it wears evenly, watch your front it wont, the middle knob will barely wear but the sides ones will making an interesting feeling when your turn corners and such. but for the price who cares!

My experiences with the 244's are the same as Scrapper's. I get about 5K out of a rear, but I must say it does wear evenly. I've never had any issues with the lugs.

My front 244 is still quite serviceable but it looks like somebody took a drawknife to it after drinking a 12-pack of beer: all kinds of scalloping and wear on the sides while the middle of it looks like new. I run both front and rear at 28psi.

Not wanting to start anything but I would say that a MT21 is a 20/80 tire. 244s are 50/50 tires.

yeah scrapper, the price really makes the 244's worth the experiment no matter what the outcome. But go figure about the weird front wear, didn't see a single negative review till now...

Nothing strange in the first +/-100 road miles! Now that the torrential spring rains have stopped for a spell, I'll be commuting 30 miles a day again and will get a better feel for them. Also, I'll soon live right next to a few hundred acres of logging roads to play on!

To be honest, I don't like going much over about 65-70 on this bike; its too small for any kind of extended freeway use... so maybe I won't have the wear problems...?

nah most likely will, same thing happened to my old man's it's not a big issue or anything just something to keep an eye on. but yeah the price is right.

These look great for the more touring side of adventure touring. I'll keep them in mind.

If you do a google image search for "Avon Gripsters," one of the first pictures has a 1000cc airhead on its side in the gravel...

my old man put some gripsters on his gs before he sold it, he seemed very pleased with them.
