New to the forum and the whole "dual sport" riding. So, big hi to all the members.
I'm looking for an input on certain bike. I was looking at other klrs, but this one caught my eye. It is 93 klr tengai. In excellent condition with 9000 miles.
Now, I like the price at $1500 and I love the "old school" color scheme and the whole look.
Being new to this, i'd like to ask other members about this bike and if they think it's right choice for me. I'm coming from sportbikes. The bike will be used mostly for commuting and some gravel trails, when i find time for it, but nothing hardcore dirt riding.
Is this bike too old, too slow or heavy to have fun? Or could this be a good starter dual sport for me?
I know, everyone's different, I'm looking for simple opinions and inputs on the bike.
Thank you

Good bike, I like the looks too, just be prepared to possibly do more maintenance due to age.

its a good bike , it will be a lot slower then what you are used to . it has a few different parts then the A model . it has 41mm forks , better front brakes and wind protection to name a few . all motor parts are the same. i love the look of the tengai too , its the way all the klr's should have been . low miles and a good price ... welcome to the club ..

Can't go wrong with the tengai ... I have a 91 model and can't fault it ... 46000km and the only parts replaced is the sprockets and chain ... My mechanic said it should last till 160000km before it needs any majors .... Service and look after it and it will give you years of riding fun .....

My 1990 Tengai...

Well my Tengai project is going well so far. Replaced many stripped, missing or rusted bolts. Several loose fasteners were found like one of the sub frame bolts was almost all the backed out and stripped from being so loose. Got a cheap pair if hand guards installed, the guards seem OK but the hardware was junk so I replaced all of the bolts. New foot pegs, installed a tool tube behind the left pelican case, forks were loose so I took everything apart and tightened the stem nut. Front brake lever was bent so I replaced that and will keep the old one for an emergency. Found a wire nut where someone spliced in the wiring for something that has long since been removed so that was soldered spliced and covered with environmental heat shrink. Bleed the front brake because it was very mushy, the fluid look like it was recently replaced but flushed both lines anyway. The front did have a lot of air in the line so they work much better now. The side stand where it forks and attached to the frame boss was bent out like someone was using it to mount the bike fixed that problem with a 3 lb sledge hammer but still need to sand and paint it when the new spring arrives, the old one was very rusty. Changed to oil and filter and the old oil looked good and the previous owner said he had recently changed it, but changed it anyway. Gas tank was cleaned and flushed with Metal Rescue on the inside, it was a mess. Added a headlight guard, oh and repaired the cracked right fairing with Plast-Aid and backed with fiberglass cloth. Still need to prime it but not sure weather I want to change the paint job or not??? I also have a longer shift lever on order and a couple of other goodies.
