KL600-A1 is the actual Model number for a 1984 KLR600 kick-start ONLY model. So the difference is, actual factory model number vs 'nickname'.
KL600-B1 is 1985 electric and kick-start.
KL600-B2 is 1986 electric and kick-start.

I ride KL650-A1, first year of the KLR650. What year is that?

Thank goodness yours is an E-start!
The 1984 with kick only was an Absolute Bear to Start, with a marginal Igniter.

Which makes one Wonder, 'how or Why did the Previous Owner' break the Kick-Starter?? I can't find a 'scratching my head' icon.

Bigdave,
You seem to have some odd info, but from the UK, it could be possible.

1st,
I'll suggest if it was produced in the late summer/autumn of Year 1986, it is probably actually a 1987 Model.
2nd,
To the best of my knowledge all '84/'85/'86 models were called KLR600's. But Actual displacement, was only 564mL.
There should be a cast displacement mark on the lower LH side of the cylinder, camchain Tunnel. Just above the gasket line.
3rd,
Some country or countries apparently did receive a 1989 "Tengai" KL650-B1.
But the US of A, received the KL650-B2 1990 model and the KL650-B3 1991 model. The USA did Not receive any -B1 1989's nor any of whatever may have been built for 1992 and later.

In the USA, the internet has several sites to "Check or Inspect or Search your VIN" It should be 'Stamped' into the steering neck of the frame, behind the headlight.

Ah ha I've found my log book for her, she was first registered in feb'87
And she is a KL650-A1
It has electric start and a couple of possible tell tale pieces from pics I've seen;
Single air breather on fuel tank, twin round clocks? Are there any other identifiable differences between a models?
