What type of bike is a 2006 klr 650

I just purchased a 2006 KLR 650 and am loving it so far. I was just curious though is this bike considered to be a dual sport or an adventure bike?

People are all over the map on this, but here's my thoughts FWIW;

The KLR isn't an ADV bike, especially the Gen1......it isn't technically a dual sport IMO either though it's often referred to as such (even by me). Kawasaki advertised the Gen1 KLR as a "Dual Purpose" bike and I'd suggest that is the most accurate description.

- Dual Sport: KTM500EXC, Beta 500RS, Husqvarna FE501, and similar bikes.....basically dirt bikes that are street legal

- Dual Purpose Bikes: KLR650, DR650, XR650L, KTM690........you could argue the DRZ400 and WRR in either of the first two catagories

- ADV bikes: All the twins; F800Gs, Triumph 800XC, 1200GS, KTM 950/990/1090/1190, Honda AT, V strom, etc. .......big variation in capabilities in this catagory, i.e. AT vs. V strom

2 cents,
Dave

Oh, and some people (particularly some of us older guys) will call any bike with lights and offroad pretentions an "Enduro" but my take is that the term Enduro refers to offroad bikes designed for enduro competition (Like the ISDE); KDX175/200, IT175/200, XRR's, PE175/250, etc.

My opinion is that dual-purpose bikes and adventure bikes are basically the same. I could say that adventure bikes are more targeted to the asphalt while still having the ability to run on unpaved roads. In this sense the KLR is a dual purpose bike because it is 50/50 from on road and off road.

The man on top of the mountain didnít fall there.

I always classed mine as a dual sport, able to do street or off road. ADV means pretty much the same thing to me, just longer distances! Lol

I was taking a break on the side of the Dalton Highway with my snappy, adventure-class Super Tenere and a solo Yamaha FZ6r rolled by. That's when I decided its not the bike but how one uses it.
