Hey!

I recently purchased a 1986 KL600 B2 as a bit of a project bike. I've come to realise its had a different engine in it at some point (or so I believe) it doesn't appear to have a starter motor?! I think i'm right in saying 1986 models were all fitted with one? There is no signs it had one before, the engine number doesn't match up to the frame is there every chance my engine is from an earlier pre electric start model?

Is there a way to retrofit a starter motor back onto this engine? I would need new cases as there isn't even the bit sticking up with a void where the starter would go.

If someone can advise or help me work out what engine i've got in this 1986 frame it would be fab. Engine number is KL600AE001411

I purchased this as a non runner last week and didn't even think to look for the starter, it was advertised as a non runner so didn't try to 'start' it when I picked it up haha! Few bits on order before I can attempt to start it with the kickstart.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Cheers

In the USA, the frame VIN and engine serial # do Not usually match, unless required by the country of manufacture.

That said, your KL600AE001411 engine # is probably truly a 1984 kickstart only replacement engine, as you already suspected. The 1984 RH main engine case would not even have the 2 mounting towers for the RH end of a starter motor.

Your kickstart and clutch parts may be worth more than your entire bike to some KLR650 riders!

Thanks for the reply PDWestman. Its a shame as I had big plans to turn this into a street tracker but the sort of market I want to appeal too will not like the idea of kicking over an old 600cc engine! I'm going to get it running and road legal and probably sell it on for someone to enjoy. Unless someone on here wants to make me an offer for any of the engine parts!!

Cheers
