Kle500

Spotted this one near the hotel parking lot in Reykjavik last week.

It looked familiar but not quite. It has a twin cylinder engine of 500cc. Was this model even sold in North America?

A brief web search found a bunch of negative reviews, mostly downing the bike for low power (<40hp).

Anybody have any familiarity with this model?

Must admit, I was unaware it even existed.

The KLE500 was based on the EX500 Ninja / EN500 Vulcan engine which in my opinion was a perfectly fine 500cc liquid cooled parallel twin engine. I can only suggest that the KLE500 used the Vulcan level of power producing components. Tuned towards low and mid-range torque instead of peak horsepower.

It has the GPZ500 engine that was rated at 60hp. Using different cams and carb jetting the KLE made 50hp in the 90s and 45hp in the 2000s.

Essentially, it is a KLR but with a displacement to meet licensing requirements in Europe and elsewhere.

No not really, IMHO.
The KL & KLR series have always been single cylinder, dual-sport models, both air cooled & liquid cooled engines. With a fair amount of dirt road & rougher 2 track road worthiness. In some countries they actually sold KLR500's, with bore of 89mm & stroke of 80mm.

The KLE series both older & current are twin cylinder, highway oriented bikes with graded gravel and the occassional pot-hole capable suspension.
More of a predecessor to the current Versys series, IMO.
DPelletier and Nordlicht like this.
