KLR 600AE Year 2000??

Hi guys anyone know about a KLR 600AE I cant find any info on the net about the bike just 600 was the predecessor to the 650 like in 1985. I am looking to buy this 600AE over in Philippines bike is watercooled and looks great. Its hard to get a bigger dual purp over here not much available. Registration says Kawasaki KLR 600AE year 2000? Im just wondering if parts are interchageable to 650 the same or difficult to get? Any help appreciated!! Thanks merry

I think that it is possible the bike may have been imported into the Philippines in the year 2000. Therefore the government agency assigned it model year of importation.

The fact that you refer to it as 600AE suggests to me that that information was possibly taken from the Engine Serial Number, located under the exhaust pipe, top rear of engine. The engine serial number probably reads something like this, KL600AE******.
What I always found odd was that the electric start 85 & 86 models still used the KL600AE engine numbers even though it had to have some redesign to the LH engine casting & covers.

The actual VIN or Frame number should be on the RH side of the frame steering neck.
1984 kickstart only model may read KL600A-****** (country dependant possibly) or JKAKL4A1********* (17 characters total for USA model).
1985 & 1986 electric with kickstart model may read KL600B-****** or JKAKL4B1*********.

Is there any chance that you can acquire both the Frame & Engine numbers from this bike?

There are not many parts that directly interchange between KL600's & KL650's.

Welcome to the Forum. Hope you enjoy your time here. Could I ask you to please not post the same question in different areas. Once is sufficient. It will be seen.

Thanks

Hardly anything is interchangeable with the 650. They're different bikes.
Check your VIN against this:

just grab your vin and go to the Kawi Owner Center kawasaki.com/Parts

look at the bottom of the page to enter the VIN

also remember, any bike built in the latter part of the year examble 12/2019 is probably the next year model. in this case 2020

just in case you didnt know

Well now, isn't that interesting. Kawasaki did continue production of the KL600-B series bikes for some countries at least to 1994.

But some how the numbers seem 1 year off.

1985 KL600-B1 first year of electric / kick start model in the USA.
1986 KL600-B2
Maybe they totally skipped one year of production for any and all countries? Possibly for the 1987 introduction of KL650-A1?

The 1994 KL600 would have been -B10 if it had been produced for 10 years Inclusive, at least as I have always understood their earlier (easier) numbering system.

Yes, Europe got the 600 for quite a while. On the German KLR forum about 1/3 of the discussion is related to the 600 and there are daily 600 posts. Rather common.

You're on to something. Looks like there is no B3.

The numbering of the KL600 goes wonky in 1990.

The U.S. Service Manual applied to A1=1984. The Service Manual Supplement shows that it applies to B-1 through B-5, 1985 through 1989, respectively. So there was a B3=1987. Product year application is on the back cover.

If you got to European Part Websites (UK, Italy, Germany), they list parts for B6=1991, B7=1992, B8=1993 and B9=1994. They account for a production sequence of A1 + B1 through B9. However, on the years they jump over 1990 and associate B6 with 1991.

I don't know why this is either.

Here is a link to one such parts site that shows them skipping 1990 altogether.

For the OP, I have a B1.
Confirm, there are very limited part cross reference opportunities between the 600 and the 650.
The availability of OEM parts through online parts dealers has been extremely good. I've had a couple parts go to back order, but I ultimately got the ones I wanted.
The availability of used parts on places like eBay is equally good from part outs. I've gotten some really good deals buying used instead of new, like I paid $22 for a used cam chain tension that runs $110 (and is still available) on parts websites.
Apparently there was time that aftermarket accessories were available for the KL600. In fact, Acerbis used to make an oversized gas tank for it. However, all the aftermarket stuff like that and tail racks and whatever have long dried up.
