I recently bought a used KLR650 on impulse and got on the bike for a 500 mile ride on knobbies, most of it in spitting misty, wet-road conditions, with a little dirt thrown in. Having never ridden a KLR, it took awhile to adjust to the fact that I was not on my Dakar with ABS, but I came away from the initial ride with a real respect for the bike. A solid machine. With a full tank of gas, you feel it when drifting into a turn on single track or jeep trails, and make no mistake, unless you are the kind of rider with the skill level to keep the throttle pinned in the deep sugar sand, I would invest in a steering damper and maybe upgrade the forks. But out of the box, it seems like a great bike for the money. I would only add that the KLR bike could be a bit of a handful for shorter riders.
