2014 KLR owner

Have had my 2014 klr for a couple months and love it, I ride it to work every day, rain or shine, I have almost ,1500 miles on it,my add ons are, nelson riggs survivor series which are good bags, keeps everything dry and you can stuff them full, dirt works racks to hold them on, givi engine guards, a taller windshield, ram mount, auxiliary plug, when the tires wear out I'm putting on Michelin anacky 3s (spelling) and a center stand. I have a 09 voyager that I do my two up and long tours on, but in August I'm doing the yooper madness on the klr, 1000 miles in 24 hrs and the U.P. will be fun. I've done no off-road with it, just coming back and forth to work, I just like the way the bike looks and handles, plan on doing Ironbutt rides on it more than anything, all in all I plan on keeping this bike for a long time.

Hey Rodney, I too am a relatively new 2014 owner (11 mo.s / 1000 mi.). I’ve owned over a dozen bikes the past 40 yrs but this is the first Kawasaki. My bike only had 4K mi. on it and it was all stock. I’ve been enjoying it so far except for the high revs at fwy speed and no 6th gear. Last month I changed the primary sprocket from the stock 15t to a 16. Wow! Totally different ride. RPMs are down about 500 but all the new shift points are so much nicer and I never am trying for that 6th gear anymore. Im an 80/20 rider with that 20 mostly on fire roads and groomed trails. Changing back to the 15 isn’t a big deal if I ever need to. Do yourself a favor if you haven’t already and spend the $15 for a 16t and get a whole different bike! Enjoy!

RPMs are down about 500 . . .
Saving 500 rpm? Good! With a 15-tooth countersprocket, you'd be doing 8,000 rpm.

[Just messing with you, MVMike! Glad you like your new gear ratio. Are motorcycles permitted on the freeway express lanes in southern California? Motorcycles are OK, free of toll, here in northern Virginia, except for the Dulles-Leesburg Greenway.]

Hi Damocles, yes bikes are allowed in the “diamond” lanes as they’re called here. (high occupancy vehicle -HOV officially ). I got a ticket in 1986 from the Highway Patrol riding in the first one on the 10fwy in L.A. The posted signs said “vehicles with 3 or more occupants only” but all the freeway on-ramp diamond lanes said “motorcycles ok”. Faced a Judge over it and he said “you presented the best case I’ve had over this citation, but you’re still guilty!” I stormed out and paid the fine. Within a year after that bikes were exempt in all Diamond lanes.
Damocles and Uncle Dick like this.
