Black Betty Ready For Colorado

Was doing some last-minute maintenance on the KLR this morning and thought I'd post a couple of photos of it all farkled out for my trip to Colorado. Additions since Winter in preparation for the trip include the Wolfman tank/crotch warmer bag (rain gear, tire guage, camera, large quantity of 800mg Ibuprofen, etc.) and the HT nerf bar pannier-type bags (tire-changing stuff, assorted maintenance/repair goodies) and the Mefo Explorers.

Was planning on riding out, but my back isn't in the best shape: too many years of carrying an Army rucksack. So, she's riding out in the back of the Toyota and I'll ride when I get there and hope the back holds up.

Plan on riding Trail Ridge Road through Rocky Mountain National Park and also up Pike's Peak as well as highways/byways and dirt roads. Leave in a couple of weeks if I can get across the Missouri river.

Looks great! Are you coming thru here on I-70?
My buddy is riding his out there in a few weeks (but he's crazy).

I'm taking Hwy. 36 across Northern Kansas if things aren't flooded. I was planning that route when I was going to ride out, now I'm taking it just for sentimental reasons although 80 out and 70 back would be faster. We always used to go out 36 to Colorado when I was a kid: haven't traveled it for 30 years. I'll probably take I-70 back to Missouri since two trips down 36 is pointless.

Where's your buddy riding from? Wish I had the fortitude for a ride of that duration since my chances for adventure fade with every passing year, but I'm familiar enough with my back to know it's a really bad idea: would probably wind up trailering the KLR back behind a rental car.

Ah, yes. Haven't been there in quite awhile, either. Used to be a ritual to go out and camp and fish at Tuttle Creek. Is your buddy taking 70 to Colorado? If he is, more power to him: I wouldn't do it. Not to deride him in any way: 75 that far on a KLR just ain't for me. There seem to be a lot of folks that do it, though.

He did it last year too. I wouldn't want to do it either. Another bud rode his WR250 out to SW CO a few weeks ago and left it there. Nuts!
What day are you going thru 36 N of here?

Does this bring back memories of Tuttle?

Yeah, sure does. That's a great video and those look like some fun roads to run. Amazing how much the topography and vegetation changes just 150 miles or so from here. Whatever that camera is you used really puts up some nice, sharp images.

I'm not sure on the dates yet, probably around the 21st or 22nd.

Bike looks great! Enjoy the ride. I know what you mean about aging--wondering how long before I am riding a Can-Am....

Doesn't matter, as long as you have the spirit of a rider!
