Laugh if appropriate, but canola? As in canola oil? Is that what that stuff is? Serious question, here.

Yes.

The yellow flower produces seed pods from which the canola oil is eventually extracted.

Yup, the crops are growing like crazy! Definitely no moisture problems this year (except maybe a little too much water in the low spots). Nice pic, your KLR looks great!

Technically, it's rapeseed.

Urban legend has it that no one would buy 'rapeseed oil', so they named it 'Canola oil' for marketing purposes. Canola comes from 'Canadian oil, low acid' and was named by the company (Canadian Oil, I think) that developed the plant. It's one of the top sources of vegetable oil.

I was in Ireland earlier this year when the rapeseed was in full bloom. Thousands of acres of the stuff, and very pretty.

Such is the useless info one picks up from having been born in farm country.

I remember being in the stockyards with my grandfather, a rodeo calf roper turned sheep broker, and complaining about the stench.

His retort was "Smells like money to me."

I'll ride through farm country any day.

I'll be darned. Thanks for the info, everybody. Never really knew where the stuff came from: strictly soybeans and corn around here. I have expanded my horizons.
