My '11 KLR build

I've always enjoyed posting build threads for my offroad trucks so I thought I'd start something over here for this next chapter in my life.

Picked up this 2011 KLR a couple weeks ago after a short search for older KLRs. It's got some scratches on the fairings, 2 dents on one side of the tank, and a gouge on the left side of the swing arm, a flat front tire, 50% left on the tires, new battery, and 4500kms. Perfect!! I don't have to worry about putting the first scratches in!

Stock Skid Plate

Wanted to pick the bike up off the ground and figured I'd remove the skid plate as it didn't look like it would take any load.

Turns out, I was right in some way. Here's what I found. Previous owner must have flung a few pebbles at it. New skid plate is on the future purchase list (along with way too may other things!!)

Motorcycle Lift

I've always had a lift in the shop for the ATVs and the other motorcycles.

Works perfectly for the KLR. Totally stable too. Great way to work on it AND move it around in the shop.

1st parts order

Just placed my first order of things for the KLR. Enroute from Canadasmotorcycle are 2 new tires and tubes, oil filters, a new tire/tube repair kit, and few other tools I wanted to add to the tool chest.

After reading tons of tire reviews I decided to buy a d606 rear and a t63 front. These are more off-road oriented than my actual driving will be, but when I do go off-road, I wanted good tires. If my biggest regrets going with tires this aggressive are that they wore a little too fast and made a little bit of noise.... Oh well.

Also have a cart (electronic one) full of stuff from twisted throttle. Think I'm gonna go with the sw-motech skid and crash bars. Would like a JNS skid but it's too expensive to get here (remember, Canada). Same for the nomad rider crash bars that I'd like. They're just too much to get them up here. (Unless one of you knows of something cheaper that I haven't found.)

Bark busters are in the order too.... No doohickey stuff. Gonna get that when the smoke clears from my wallet. From what I've read, I'll be comfortable for a while yet

I was just reviewing bash plates last night. I noted that the JNS are sold out on all configurations anyway. That's a meaty plate. Must have been a holiday rush or something.

My 2011 with 15,000 miles had it's spring so loose, it did nothing. FWIW

10-4. It will get done before I have that many miles on.... Just need to pace the spending, and those things will be in the next order. Did you put a torsion spring in? Did you bother changing your doohickey, or just the spring? And did you put new gaskets on? New bolt too?

Thanks for the info!!

Next time try Kenda 270 tires. I ride tens of thousands of miles of dirt road routes and have been through about 10 sets of Kenda 270. They are a little less knobby then the D606 and quieter and less expensive. I tried a D606 and went back to the Kendas.

You should be OK with the gen2 doohickey up to 10,000 miles.

Thanks for the suggestion GoMotor! Actually, I have tried those tires on my little DR200. I did like them on that bike, but I'm sure they totally handle differently on a big bike. Also just wanted to see for myself what all the fuss was about this 606.
