Top 10 Things That Go Wrong On Group Rides

Quote:
The best way to solve all these problems is to just ride by yourself, old numero uno. But no man is an island, and group rides are their own special kind of fun. At MO, we definitely do our fair share of group rides. Here’s what we’ve learned about the things most likely to go wrong, and what you can do to ward them off ahead of time.

Most of those things can go wrong even when you are by yourself and in most cases it's better to be with at least another person to assist. To me this story is titled wrong.

What goes wrong on group rides is things like 20 bikes trying to get gas at one set of pumps. 30 people needing to use a bathroom - usually never at the same time.

My Kaw Barn - 2004 KLR, 2006 Concours (sold), 1997 Bayou 400.

"It's a friggen motorcycle, it's not supposed to be comfortable, quiet or safe. The wind noise is supposed to hurt your ears, the seat should be hard and riding it should make you shit your pants every now and then. "

I just rode the Hooch DS Rally (short for Chattahooche State Forest) in North Georgia for the first time this past weekend. On the first day, the fueling stop was right after lunch about two miles out. There were 150 riders in the rally and there were two pumps at the fueling stop...one pump had regular, one had premium. Nothing else close from a quick look at my gps. Getting the picture of what that place looked like after lunch? It was a little more spread out than all 150 trying to get gas at the same time, but the lines were pretty long, especially to get the premium.

Great rally all-in-all. I gave them advice to tell riders to consider fueling before lunch to relieve the post-lunch wait in line.

I think two types of group rides are inherently dangerous:

Toy Runs: Holy crap! Do not ride charity toy runs during the Holidays. Just give some money or go buy and donate some toys (and get some good toys you cheap bastards, like good remote control cars or pellet guns and stuff like that). Years ago my business actually sponsored a Toy Run out of St. Petersburg, Florida and two years in a row there were bad wrecks. In both years there was a crash right at the start as the riders tried to navigate the right-hand turn out of the Harley Dealer…true! After that, the spectacle of hundreds of motorcycles brought people to the street waving and hollerin, which in turn got the bikers to waving and beeping and…taking their eyes of the road. Boom, crash! I didn’t ride the Toy Run after the first year and stopped sponsoring it after the second.

Poker Runs: Who is the idiot that invented an event involving stopping and drinking at bar after bar after bar while on your motorcycle? Seriously, wtf. I got dragged into one of these poker runs once where you had to stop at specific bars along the track and get a playing card or two to make a poker hand. I started in the back of the pack, but didn’t drink anything…just got my cards. I rolled into the start-finish location and they were like, how did you get back here so fast?

Totally agree. Much title and little content.

The man on top of the mountain didn’t fall there.
