Rattler in the road

Took a KLR ride today to an abandoned fire tower, quite a ways out in the country. Coming back down the trail, there was a rattler stretched across the trail. By the time I saw it, I had no room to turn around or to back up. No room to safely go around, so I stopped, dismounted, and tried to scare it off by throwing rocks. Guess he liked his sunshiny spot, 'cause he refused to move. So, I did what I really hate to do: I killed it. Poor snake. Minding his own business, until dispatched by a big rock. 17 buttons on his rattle, if I counted right. I feel bad about having to kill him, but thought it was the wisest thing to do. I was riding alone, many miles away from any other people. Guess I coulda waited him out, or maybe found a long stick to prod him along. oh, well. What's done is done. See pics below.

That's one big old mature boar rattler. Looks like he's been crawling the Earth for a few years. Not something I'd especially want to deal with.....

Something to be said about living in Eastern Canada. Lots of snakes, but none that would ruin a ride it they got testy.
