Used bike transmission noise

I took a used KLR for a test ride yesterday. This is a 2009 with 40,000 on the odometer. The bike really looks well cared for. This was the first time I have ridden a KLR. My question was about transmission noise. The transmission had what I would consider a very loud whine in the 1 thru 3 gears. In fourth it was quieter and there was no noise in fifth gear. The noise seemed to be coming from the right side of the transmission. I did not notice any noise during idle. Is this type of noise normal for a KLR of this age or does it indicate some kind of issue? Your opinions would be appreciated. Tom

If the bike shifts smoothly, and rolls easily coasting with the clutch lever pulled, seems like probably a non-problem, to me.

Seriously interested in the bike, but still concerned? Have a professional of experienced amateur mechanic check it out. Diagnosis by Internet has its limitations!

The right side of the bike is where the primary drive is housed, right?

Is it possible to be hearing gear whine from that? The transmission gears are somewhat central in the cases, but they span from one side to the other. Seems unlikely to consistently hear the same noise from the same location throughout five gear changes.

I haven't noticed any gear tire noises, but I typically ride with a helmet and have learned to tone out a lot of sounds ( I own a lot of jalopies). I'll take a close listen to my
bike and see if a hear anything.

Kind of odd, I don't recall my 08 making any kind of a whining noise.

KLRs are not noted for having noisy transmissions. A whining noise in a gear train can be an indication of a bearing failing. Be very careful buying this bike if you are hearing noise loud enough to hear while riding. I would walk away if I were you. There are lots of other KLRs for sale.

I tried riding with my head as close to the engine as possible. Riding around in the yard laying on the seat made my wife give me weird looks ( she does that a lot), but I never heard a single bit of gear noise.

Bearings are cheap, but I'd be concerned that there is some sort of issue going on. Maybe minor, maybe not. I'm no KLR guru, but mine's silent.
