South Charlotte NC

Hey All,

Any riders out there from South Charlotte area? Just picked up a 2017 Camo KLR 650. Fun as hell! Not familiar with trails and fun places to ride. Curious about good day trips and trails near here.

I'm a 50 year old business owner with more free time/control of my schedule than most. Been enjoying early morning rides since I got the bike, but running out of interesting places that I know about.

Anyway, any ideas/rides welcome.

I'm in Harrisburg ... Not much "dirt" around the area. Uwharrie isn't far away but the "rock crawlers" have torn up enough that I won't ride any of the trails. Not a bad place to practice on the dirt roads. Heading to the mountains you will find some fun riding ... If you find anything "local" worthwhile let me know ...

Funny you say that. I was thinking of heading out to Uwharrie to check that out. $5 to ride all day. What do you ride that you won't ride there? I've got a KLR 650. What's the difference between "trails" which you won't ride and dirt roads for practice?

I've also checked out Carolina Adventure World (little closer to me than you as I am in Weddington). Similar to Uwharrie it sounds good but I haven't actually tried it (it's too darn hot by 11AM right now to have much fun).

Have a daughter who lives up by Banner Elk, will probably ride up the next time I visit. Love that whole area and it's way less hot this time of year.

Have to pipe in. I'm pleased to see a 50yo here. I'm sure there are others but I haven't paid attention to the profiles. I'm a 51yo KLR rider and looking to purchase a KTM 690. I feel the need for more power like my younger motocross and enduro days. I have guys and woman tell me that I am "immature" to be riding my KLR in the dirt and when I tell them I am looking for a more aggressive bike for the dirt they say I am irresponsible. I have five kids and a wife! Yeah, so I should stop living? My family supports me as long as I support them. Ha.

Enjoy your new KLR, they are lots of fun, comfortable and versatile.

Bill

oh, also a business owner of a very small manufacturing company. I am working on selling it though. Time for a change.

Yes some of us "old farts" do still play in the dirt, I'm 61, the wife is 57 (rides her own) and can pretty much keep up with me.

The "trails" in Uwharrie are pretty beaten up. My advice if you don't have crash bars (plastics are EXPENSIVE) or can't pick the bike up yourself, don't go. I have a friend who used to ride his KLX there quite a bit and has no interest at this point to go back. He does go to Carolina Adventure but I have never been there myself. If you have never had much gravel under your tires (my wife hadn't) there is enough road to get the "feel" of it in Uwharrie. Many times we have ridden over, packed a picnic and let the wife get her "feel". I had always looked out for her when we were riding in the dirt until last year when we were in New Mexico. We were heading up a pretty good incline with some baseball sized rocks and I looked in my mirror and couldn't see her. My thought was "Sh#@, where is she" so I started to slow down. I heard her (we run helmet to helmet communications) say "Don't friggen' slow down I'm right on your tail". Sure enough I looked again and she was hot on my heels ... Yes she has graduated with honors ... And by the way we both ride KLR 650"s
