Tour de Tellico V - 3rd Weekend in May!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

It's that time of year again, when we start talking about that tour in TN! Following in TDA's footsteps, this is the 5th year to have the Tour de Tellico!! I still remember the first one and love seeing those familiar faces every year it rolls around!

This year the 3rd weekend in May is straddling the fence.......... so unless there are any nay's, lets pic May 14-16 (Fri-Sun)! Of course, there will be several people coming in on Thursday for any Early-Bird rides, as well.........

If it seemed that last years tour was not as large as the year before (TDT_III), it's because it wasn't........ The best I can tell, we were down from 130 in '98 to between 80 & 90 for TDT-IV. That is still a large number, seeing how that's how many we had at TDP-III (Pisgah's largest group)! We also had several of us scattered throughtout a few campgrounds in the area last year, but as we always do........ we come together for some great riding and fellowship! And, of course, it's not about how many show, but the good times we have with those who can come!!!!!

I have talked to Mark at Cherohala Motorcycle Resort, www.cycleresort.com and they are ready to serve us! Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings, they will have their new Omelet Bar!! Also, this year, registration will start Feb.1 !!! Parking your tow vehicle (if applicable) beside your camp is fine...... but they are not able to take RVs at this time.

Last year there was some concern about staying at CMR in the future, due to Mark and Renae placing the campground up for sale. Mark had even suggested to me a possible site around Tellico that could cater to large groups, but not much more was said after that. Over the past few months, a fellow rider had suggested to me Crawford's Campground. If you are not familiar with it, it was THE place to camp for offroad wheelers such as Jeep, buggy, rig owners, etc. before Tellico ORV was closed down. I went there a few years ago to watch rigs compete on their homemade rock garden. Lately they have been seeing more DS riders using the facilities. They are located between Murphy and the old ORV trail system. Here is their website..... www.crawfordsattellico.com

Now, everyone knows that this decision is not mine. I'm just wanted to share with everyone what has been suggested to me since TDT-IV. After talking with Mark the other day, it seems they are going forward with building onto their campground every year, providing more & more services for their patrons. I think the forum is a great place for us to discuss such things as this and look forward to hearing from you..............!!!!!!! As for me, I'm a sucker for tradition and enjoy meeting at CMR every year. Of course, since I live 45 minutes from CMR and commute back and forth each day of the Tour, I feel I don't really have a 'dog in the hunt', when it comes to deciding if their facilities are right for me.

If nothing else, I like the idea of using Crawfords for a new medium size rally, like how 'Slaying the Dragon' is for the Robbinsville area of NC and 'Bat Out Of Helen' (BOOH) is for North GA.

Just for grins, here is a look at some Yearly Events....

Rally___________________When__________________Size

Tour de Apalachicola (FL)______3rd weekend in January_____Medium-Large
Slaying the Dragon (NC)_______April_____________________Medium
Tour de Tellico (TN)___________3rd weekend in May________Large
Tour de Pisgah (NC)___________3rd weekend in September__Large
Bat Out Of Helen (GA)_________October__________________Medium
Bama Jama (AL)______________1st weekend in November___Small (for now)

Many Small rallies throughout the SE, as people put them together....... pick one and go!

My guess at sizes....
Small_______ <15
Medium_____ 15-50
Large_______ 51-150
Super_______ >150

O.K.....................

Buck and I have been talking, and here is what is going on as far as food at CMR......

Friday-Sunday Breakfast!
Bottomless Coffee
Omelette Bar
Bisquits

Friday-Saturday Supper!
Hambugers
Hotdogs
BBQ

The ladies at B & B Grocery (down the road) are doing a majority of the food. If riders (10 or more) are interested in having lunch at CMR, Buck can give the ladies a call and they can whip up some good food!

On a side note............ Buck is going to have a couple of Port-A-Potties around..........I asked him to place 1, just for you crazy guys, down in the hollar!! HA!!

ALSO........... Tellico Motorcycle Outfitters and Twisted Throttle will be there with door prizes!!!!! Thanks Guys, you're AWESOME!

Erik Stephens of Twisted Throttle is scheduled to arrive at TdT on Thursday, and will be conducting a demonstration, which I think is about efficient packing for adventure touring. Unfortunately he will have to move along on Friday as he has 2 or 3 other rallies to attend that weekend. Word has it that he is also bringing some neat goodie bags and door prizes to be distributed to worthy individuals. Be sure to welcome him to our humble gathering and thank him for his interest in the Southeast KLR group!

Guys, I'm going to see what times Erik will be at TDT.......... and I'm thinking of slightly modifying my Thurs. route to keep close to Tellico so we can participate in this demo!

Here is a message from Buck, who runs Cherohala Motorcycle Resort..............

Hello All,

Just an update for the TdT V festivities...

Thurs Erik from Twisted Throttle will be in the house with goodie bags and the "I'm Packin' " demo on adventure travel packing. If you know Twisted Throttle you've seen their cool ad-mo bike creations and useful products.

RB Stone will be performing in the Pavillion Saturday night starting at 8:00. Songwriter and performer, RB's musical stylings include country, blues, and southern rock. RB has recorded 14 albums, and has toured the world, and performed with Marshal Tucker Band, Trishia Yearwood, Charlie Daniels, and others.

The ladies from B&B will be providing a fantastic Omelette bar Fri, Sat, and Sun mornings. Wake up hOngry ! They'll also have their homemade breakfast biscuits and bottomless coffee in the Pavilion. For dinner try their Star Mountain Burger - truly a burger of prodigious proportions. Hot dogs and Colleen's homemade BBQ too ! (I'm ready for a good ol' slaw dog). All meals are pay-as-you-go and reasonably priced. Also the ladies will make special meals for 10 or more - we'll have menus available.

Cherokee Chuck has a huge array of rides and maps from Noob (me) to Hooligan (you know who you are) rides. Steve "BurningTime" will be available to lead street tours for those who may want a smooth ride for a change.

We've got the porta-potties scheduled and I'm placing recycling bins for glass, aluminum, and plastic near the trash cans - please recycle. Bundled firewood is available in the pavilion for the firerings, and of course we'll be lighting up the firepit nightly.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all here at the CMR !

Best,
Buck
