Ride safe, Teacherman!

I grew up in the Owens Valley, and learned to ski at Mammoth. In recent years I've spent a couple weeks staying in Lee Vining at the Mono Vista RV park - yeah, staying in my 5th wheel...

While you're in Lee Vining, make sure you have lunch at the Whoa Nellie Deli in "The Mobil" gas station just up from the intersection of Hwy 395 and Hwy 120. Good food - especially for a gas station!

What a ride soun...........(sorry I had to stop and wipe the drool off my IPad)....sounds great. Been on the east side years ago in a 4x4 and been up Hwy 1 on a 700 street bike.
I think I will have to put this onmy list for my KLR.
Take some pictures and post please......I'll have my drool rag in hand.

Yeah, the Eastern Sierra is a great place to explore. Have skied Mammoth since early 80s. The backroads behind Bodie are a good place to explore. Saline Valley as well plus get to soak. Good KLR country. Westgard pass. Highway 120 East from Lee Vining to Benton is my favorite street road. Done it several times on my FJR1300. Same for Hwy 1 up thru Big Sur. This time, on the KLR. I'm wondering how my D606s will hold up on the pavement though. Those tires have saved my butt several times on steep rocky surfaces, dirt tracks really. Still looking for the perfect 50/50 tire which probably doesn't exist. Will post photos upon return. Finally, just a heads up that Northern Nevada has plenty of "state highways" that are smooth gravel roads with many ghost towns/sites to explore. Camping anywhere as most of the state is BLM.

Ride Report: Left Saturday (instead of Friday, had to fix my truck). Virginia City, NV south to Smith Valley...35 miles of dirt, middle of nowhere to ghost town of Bodie, via Bodie Canyon, then to Mammoth Lakes. Next day, ML to Yosemite via Tioga Pass. Yosemite Valley spectacular as always, but WAY too many people, just did the loop and a few pics, then to Sequoia & Kings Cyn. Camped out Kings Cyn, then south via why 65 to 138, Old Ridge Route, Lake Huges for lunch, then to Santa Clarita, Ventura County. As I was solo, visited family. Adjusted itinerary, then to Apple Valley as dutiful son to see parents one night. Traveled back roads surrounding HWY395 back up north. 1,281 miles later, back home....KLR lowest mpg: 44 (cruising 70-75 mph on spedo which on my bike means 65-70); highest 60 mpg, but that was from ML to Kings Cyn. Low speeds, thin air, overall downhill. KLR stock saddle, no problem. Dunlop D606s did fine on slab, but I don't have a lot of confidence in tight turns with them. Used about a pint of oil. One incident of SoCal road rage. Crackhead Santa went ballistic in his truck. Why, I have zero idea...
