Aloha Vezi. My wife and I just bought our KLR's and have started to explore the area's around here, nothing heavily off-road yet, just riding surface streets for now, both of us are riding on permits until we get down your way to take the skills test some time soon. Maybe we'll see ya out there!

Another Arizona KLR Rider Here!!!

Hi Makakoa85032 !

I live in El Mirage Just north west of phoenix. Lots of on road and off roading out here. I have had my KLR since December of 2007 and finally got my M-Class License in February. I did a lot of off roading just to get the feel of the bike before doing the skills test. (AZ. Info) for Phoenix the skills test for DOT is at 1225 N. 25th Ave. Right under the I-10 freeway on 25th ave. I was even allowed to practice on their course before the instructor came out of his office he took his time on purpose to give me some practice time. The ADOT office is on the East side of 25th Ave. skill course is on west side of 25 th ave. Instructor asked me what bike i would be riding on the skill course. I told him a KLR 650...he said, piece of cake, best bike to test on course, KLR turn on a dime. He said I passed with flying colors. I was nervous but did well.
My rides I take are usually on sundays when traffic is slow, my rides avg. about 265 miles round trip. I have ridden to such places as castle hot springs, Bagdad, Kirkland, Congress, Yarnell, Salome, and down Tres Alamos road near Alamo lake through the desert, all in AZ. My rides usually consist of 1/2 dirt 1/2 road.
Keep us up to date when you take your skills test and have final license, would love to hear your experience with ADOT.
Hope to see you out there!!!!

Welcome to the board. Obtaining your motorcycle endorsement is very easy just stay calm during the test. I usually ride in the Tortilla Flats, Goldfield area and an occasional ride to Globe.

Have fun!

Thanks for the post's. My wife and I went to the Test Site in Mesa on Valley Auto Dr last Saturday and watched a few people. First guys was on a KLR and he passed (looked real good), next up was a Sportster and she dumped it (no damage just scratched the pipes and air cleaner). Next up was a girl on a crotch rocket and she passed it. We both feel we can pass, just need the time to take it. Will keep you updated

To pass the test the smaller the bike the better. It easier to handle and more agile. I passed my test 35 yrs. ago on a Yamaha 90.

I was looking at going to one of those riding schools and still plan on doing it, but I found out that it was only going to reduce my insurance by about $15.00 a year for both bikes. They test on 250's. I also looked into using a smaller bike, maybe a 90 or something of the sort and found that AZ MVD now has a limit on the CC's and if you take the test on anything smaller than 200 you have to take the test again if you want to ride anything 200 or above. So I guess taking the test on a scooter is out of the question. Oh, well!

The other KLR650 Forum has a list of AZ riders. 65 names so far.

go to [www] klr650 [dot] net and look in the Southwest regional forum.

This forum won't let me post a full url, but you can figure it out
