OHV decals

Anyone familiar with Arizona's new Off Highway Vehicle decal program that starts Jan 1, 2009? Here's the FAQ about it:

http://www.azgfd.gov/outdoor_recreation/ohvFAQ.shtml

I can't figure out if the KLR qualifies. I've read and reread it numerous times. Anyone want to take a guess?

No guess needed. A KLR will never need an off road sticker because it's already a fully licensed street motorcycle. It is not classified as an ATV and is not made primarily for unimproved terrain. It was made for street and forest roads and forest roads are considered improved terrain.

Far as that link.. my interpretation is...

When they talk about OHV's being street legal, they are not refering to the KLR because it is not an OHV. They are talking about quads, buggies and 4x4's setup for off road, but being registered and used as street legal vehicles.

You will have to meet the following in order to ride off road though and the KLR meets them all.....
  • Brakes.
  • Lighted head and taillights if operated between one half-hour after sunset and one half-hour before sunrise.
  • A muffler or noise dissipative device that prevents sound above 96 decibels.
  • A United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)-approved spark arrestor device.
The State Trust Land stuff isn't very informing at all and you may want to check on that if you plan to travel through any of it.

It definitely is BS that these rules and regs are made a little whacky and a lot of terms left undefined.

I guess you can go here to clarify some of the stuff

OHV Decal

To travel on State Trust lands here in AZ (elsewhere too, I imagine), you need a permit. A one year permit for an individual is $50. Pretty steep the 5 miles of road that I'd use. The permit is included if you get the decal. Considerably less money. I wonder if there is going to be any verification by the MVD on the type of bike one owns.

We had skating rinks this afternoon! I was in my Explorer Sport and didn't have 4x4 on. I was coming on to the Expressway and after hitting the black ice did a full 180. Thank god I didn't hit anyone or the concrete divider. Close call on both, but a Miracle for sure and shook me up pretty good!
