Talking The 1st Annual "DOG LIPS" Birthday Ride

To celebrate Lauri's (Chick4KLRs) Birthday we have planned a ride for this Saturday Jan 24th 2009. This is an Open Ride and Everyone is WELCOME!

The ride itself will be no more then a level 2-3 ride in some parts, mostly scenic with fun things to do along the way. We will be trying to locate a couple of GeoCaches along the way on the Apache Trail (see link below). Pack/Bring your lunch as we will stop somewhere along the way to eat. Those of you who do not want to continue on the second leg of the journey can break off at the 188, as the second leg will be the Four Peaks/El Oso trail which will be our return route.

We will meet at the Tortilla Flat Restaurant at 9:00 am in the southside parking lot on the day of the ride. To get to the start location take the 60 FWY to Apache Junction, exit Idaho head north to the 88 (Apache Trail) to the restaurant.

GeoCache site:http://www.geocaching.com/ Cahces we will be trying to locate are GC19320 (Ride Map point "B") and GC1A97F (Ride Map point "C"), for those of you who want to upload the loc's to your GPS or research the hints/clues.

Ride report Apache Trail & Four Peaks

Today was a great day for the ride, the weather was mild and perfect for a ride. Along for the ride today were Allen and Joy 2up in the v-strom, Don, John, Teal, Darin, Lauri, myself and new guy, Guy who brought a little class to the group on his BMW. After meeting up at T-Flat we headed to the first of two GeoChaches we planned to locate along the Apache Trail, GeoCache one was not located and not for a lack of trying, it's very hard to hike the side of a mountain in off-road motorcycle boots. Lauri made several runs ahead of the group while we were en route to the second GeoCache so she could take video and stills as the group rode by. At the second GeoCache we took a time out for lunch. After lunch we located the second GeoCache, and sang Happy Birthday to Lauri, and had some B-Day cookies in the shape of lips. After leaving the second break site we had four Deer run across the road within 100' of me (I was on point), Lauri also said that she had had a Deer run in front of her further down the road.

After fueling up at Butcher Hook, we headed back to El Oso Rd minus John who was only going to do the first part of the ride. Four Peaks looked rather ominous and somewhat resembled the Mater Horn as the top was hidden under quickly moving but heavy cloud cover and through the occasional breaks you could see snow on the ground, but once we crested the first ridge it was clear that the snow was at a higher elevation then we would reach. The road conditions were slick mud, but luckily no snow or ice, however the top was shrouded in thick clouds and at times visibility was severely limited. Road conditions and visibility greatly improved once we left the top.

Aside from some damage to Lauri's chain guard as a result of being sucked into the spokes of the wheel, Allen suffered a crack in the windscreen of his V-Strom.

Lauri, Darin, Teal and myself finished the day off by grabbing something to eat at Senor Taco in Fountain Hills, prior to heading home.

It was a great day with great people and I would like to thank the participants of today's ride for coming out and celebrating Lauri's Birthday.

That's way cool.I'm a cacher too.I will have bring my KLR when I visit my daughter in Mesa and dup your route to find those caches.I have four of my own caches here on the Central Coast Of Kalifornia. Caching & Motorcycling who would have guess? Been to TFlats a couple times found a couple caches with my son-inlaw. Oh I just brought the 2000 KLR650 and love it. Doing the Doo Hickey right now. Nothing was broken but just changing it to be safe.
