I have an 07 klr 650 and would like to have an outlet to plug in a cell phone charger and/or GPS. Just wondering if anyone has done this and if you hooked it directly to the battery, or through the key switch so that it is only hot when the key is on? Thanks

Hey TomJ, I've added one to my bike. I hooked the outlet up to a fuse block(because I also added some aux lights and may add another outlet when I get panniers) which was hooked up to a relay and the wire for the cooling fan (simply because it was close to the battery) and the battery. So it shuts off when the key is turned off.

Heres some threads that describe the 12v power outlet installations and locations. You could help us out here if you'd like. We could stand a good Gen I blow by blow action packed, picture heavy how-to that we can put in the Mods and Upgrades sticky. Fer posterity.

Not sure I've the ambition and energy to document the process of auxiliary 12-volt outlet wiring on a first-generation KLR, vatrader, but--been there, done that!

I wanted CONSTANT 12 VDC for my outlet (don't like GPS receiver switching to internal battery on stops), but--connecting to a "switched" + 12 VDC wire (the BROWN one) would be a similar process.

I used a genuine Wal-Mart auxiliary 12-volt socket, with spring-loaded cover, and a fused connection directly to the battery terminal.

Electrical connection is straightforward, but . . . mechanical? The KLR's relentless vibration is MADDENING! This "whole lot of shakin' goin' on" (apologies, Jerry Lee!) will FLING your plug from its socket, breaking electrical contact, every chance it gets!

I've used rubber bands as an inelegant work-around; haven't found the "sweet spot" to mount the socket with negligible vibration.

'Most anything works o.k., for occasional electrical connection, such as air compressor, etc.; however--under way with engine running, it's a different story.

Sensible, "right way" solution: Use connectors not subject to separation-by-vibration. You lose the convenience of easy automobile-style plug compatibility, but enjoy continuous connectivity. "SAE" plugs, polarized (have the + female lead toward the bike), and . . . I shudder at the expense, but "BMW-style" connectors offer higher reliability than automobile "cigar lighter" type connectors.

True confession: I haven't taken the positive-connector step myself, still relying on an automobile dashboard style plug-compatible socket. If you follow this path, mind the vibrations in the area where you mount your socket.

I bought a "bare wire" power adapter for my GPS (Lowrance XOG) from the MountGuys. The XOG uses a mini USB connector for power. The adapter converts the 12v to 5 volts. I have it wired to a relay. There's a rubber cover over the USB connector slot on the XOG and I cut a hole just big enough to plug in the adapter. That holds the adapter in place, it doesn't vibrate loose.

FYI - I did have an issue with the adapter. There's a coil inside the plastic case that stands upright without support. It eventually broke the small gauge wires connecting it to the circuit. Re-soldering and a dab of silicone seal, no problems since.

I sure like this one.. Looks like a great set up, on a great bike, done by a great guy!!


When you leavin' for Virginia? We got a raffle to set up and "acquisition" arranged for that bike. Will let you know if that power outlet helps with the ticket sales.

My flight is tomorrow morning at 5:45am.. To ATL and then to Charlottesville. Should be headed WNW by 3pm on Saturday in this..

Have an safe, uneventful trip. I wish there were things I could direct you to, so the trip would be more memorable. Virgina is as historically rich as it beautiful, and while that town you are going to isn't quite on the edge of the earth, on a good day you can see it from the grocery store.

If you are heading into West Virginia [which might be hard NOT to do, if heading west] for the trip home, you will regret not riding a bike. Motorcycle Disneyland. The worst thing in West Virginia is the state line.

Would love to meet up with ya, but I have a prior commitment.
You got a mean dog or anything?

I've driven the roads in VA and WV a lot for work, and you're right, they're made for motorcycle. This is one of those situations where I'm flying in, paying for the car, and hammering home. Staying outside of Dayton, OH Saturday night and will make the rest of the trip on Sunday.

Mean dog?? I'm never home, so I only have a pretty lonely cat.

I have the Clymers manual and can see where there are two wires maked "NC" or not connected...

My question is, can someone tell me exacly where they terminate? Or, show me a picture?

I too want to mount a 12v outlet...

On a Gen 1 bike, there's two wires behind the headlight.. Brown and Brown/White... They're switched and fused... They're not overly large, so don't run something off them that's going to draw a lot of juice..

I run my GPS off of them.

Look behind the headlight, in front of the speedo cluster.. You'll see them..

Yeah, but it's been a few years.. I've worked, one time or another, at most paper mills in the US..

This week I was in Temple Inland in Ontario, CA, last week I was at Boise in International Falls, MN and the week after next I'll be at the mill in Prewitt, NM..

I always liked the mill in Big Island, VA... Love to ride those roads on a bike.. Last time I was there I had a Crown Victoria as a rental car.. :(

There is one in Florida near Pinetta, FL. What about that one?
I've been scheduled to go there a couple times, but was sent elsewhere... I've worked at the Buckeye mill by Perry, FL a couple times, though..

I've been scheduled to go to the mill in Snowflake, AZ about a dozen times and still have never been there..

:46:...well there they are...brown/white shows hot on tester, and black/yellow shows ground on Clymers manual...
