Hey all. new to the KLR and the Forum. I Just bought a 2009 that has a messed up head. The exhaust cam and journal is messed up on the right side. The last place the oil gets to so I've read. I saw on here a place that will weld up the journal and line bore it. Something dynamics I think. Or should I just buy a used head and throw it on there. Was thinking of replacing cam with some Hot cams since I have to replace them anyway. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated. thanks

Your bike; used head might be the most economical and efficient path, IMHO. Find out Engine Dynamics' price before you act; price a new head.

A cam alone will have marginal effect on performance, again, IMHO. The horsepower curve can be shifted, but . . . don't think the peak will be much affected.

If bang-for-buck means anything, I think a big-bore kit serves you better, but . . . that's just ME! :)

where are you located?

I'd look for a good used head, they can be a little pricey as they're in demand but probably cheaper in the long run. the cams would probably need additional head work to make them worth the bucks and even then how much are you willing to spend for limited results.......

think I figured it out

Hey Guys. thanks for the Replies. and Quick, wow. I called engine dynamics and they can rebuild it for a resonable price. Apsolute worse case will still be less than $500. Thats is with replacing the exhaust cam and boring it to put a metal sleave in (bearing). If all they have to do is fix the head and not the Cam it is $170 + 25$ per side if they boar it and put the bearings in. by side I mean exhaust side and intake side

thanks again. I'm sure I'll have more ?'s for yall. trying to learn as much as I can about the bike. I'm going to go ahead and do the (doo) fix. Read up on that yesterday. Any other fixing things I need to know while I'm tearing it apart.

I would hazard to guess that the bike burns oil and that's why the head seized up. Might be a good idea to go with the 685 kit while your spending money! At least take the cylinder off replace the rings and get a fresh hone, could help. The 685 has been shown to stop oil burning for the most part.

Thanks Spec. I was planning on honing it and checking the cylinder out anyway. Didn't think about the burning oil causing the problem. Where is the best place to get the 685 kit if that is the way I decide to go? I am also going to do the DOO fix. where should I get that at? I bought the bike for $700 so I have room to fix it right. I'd like to try to keep it as cheap as possible, but I don't want to just put a bandaid on something. thanks again for all the help guys.

"Burning oil" only indirectly caused the problem, IMHO; OIL STARVATION being the proximate cause. Keep an eye on the sight glass, even with the 685 kit.

I sometimes ride with a Houston resident, who has 55,000 miles on his '08 KLR650; he obtained his 685 kit from Schnitz racing (set up by the late KLR authority, KLR Carey); his aftermarket doohickey from Eagle Mike, the manufacturer.

Don't know if the "torsion spring" was available for the doohickey transplant at the time my partner installed it; regardless, I'd recommend one now. No '08 or later stock doohickey has ever failed, although spring tension issues abound. The aftermarket doohickey has better fit and finish, with extended adjustment range.

Schnitz Racing has the kit. If you don't have a good machine shop near you M-Tech is well regarded.

Rocky Mt ATV sells the doo, get the torsion spring so you won't run out of adjustment.
