Hi, looking for power output for Australian import klr 650, aparently they are restricted to comply with Australian design rules. Also has the doo hickey problem being resolved in the 2011 model and can some one tell me about the 22 cent mod cheers.
I flipped through the front section of the factory service manual for '09's and
the Aussie model is different but only slightly. The same basic mods will apply
to your motorcycle and should give you the maximum power available from a
stock engine. These bikes are by no means powerhouses but they have some
serious pull in the first few gears.
The .22 mod is explained fully in this and the tech sections. In a nutshell shorty version
your fuel metering needle will be raised .026"-.052" (inches american) to richen the fuel
mixture slightly throughout most of the midrange rpms giving better throttle response and
a little more power that has been restricted away to meet clean air laws.
All models show 30 ft lbs torque (40 N-m/ 4.1 kgfm). That won't change and is more than plenty.
The airflow and fuel flow mods are for midrange and top end performance and easier
breathing at higher rpms.
Oh yes. The doohickey issue is resolved as far as breakage. You are safe. The spring is way too
long for little if any adjustment though and needs upgraded unfortunately. Usually most of us have
done it or had it done in the first 5,000 mi /8,000 km or less to be safe.
Thanks for the info, I have had a good look around the KLR forum and can't belive the the awsome amount of technical information and great advice. I have spent weeks reading bike reviews becoming more confused with each one, but after looking through this site my origonal decision to go for the KLR seems to be the right way to go
Bought mine over three years ago. I went riding yesterday. Finally got above 50 degrees f from a couple of weeks ago in the single digits. Still smile every time I jump on. Been riding since the mid '70s. First new bike was a Kawasaki ke100 enduro all the way up to a goldwing. The klr has been my favorite by far. Not super powerfull but it's not weak.
Wow sounds like the bike is dangerously underpowered restricted like that.
I'm of the opinion that tierd licensing is a good thing if done like the Euro model based on displacement. To mechanically restrict the motor doesn't seem to be a wise approach, especially on a 35 horsepower KLR!
