Well its been a while since i have been on this forum.I sold my 09 klr 650 and looks like its time to get back on a new bike.Ok here is my question should I get a 2012 or 2013 klr? and what about the new addition klr? The 2012 is the red one and the 2013 is the green one.I can get a great deal on the 12 btw $4922.00 otd. I also found a 2006 with 2500 miles for $3000.00 very clean bike.I still like the look of the older ones,any input would help.

$2000 will buy you plenty of farkles or gear....plus the plastics are much stronger on the Gen I machines. Also, you won't have the same oil issues that the newer bikes usually suffer from. I just do not understand why it's so even now after 5 years of trying to get it fixed. I also prefer the look of the Gen I bike better personally.....OR.....buying a brand new bike is always a nice option......just run it in nice and slow.....

Again....your wallet...your choice.

Can't speak to your preferences, but . . . I bought a new '07 off the lot, sitting next to a new '08 . . . I acknowledge the Generation 2's improvements, but . . . they weren't sufficient to steer me away from my preference for a Generation 1.

2012 or 2013? The difference between them, I feel, as George Wallace might have said, is the difference between tweedle dee and tweedle dum, alluding to Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.

You can't make a BAD decision among your choices, IMHO!

P.S. Exposed red plastic fades-to-pink rather quickly, in my observation.

A cared for Gen 1 with low miles would be my choice too.

The only problem with the gen 1 is I have to get it shipped and it adds extra cost to the price of the bike.It brings the cost close to the price of the gen 2 by about $900.00.I also found a 09 xr650l with 600 miles,I know its a different animal but just a thought!!

As my bike is on the highway or gravel roads most of the time, I gravitate to the 2nd gen machines. Differences between the 2012 and 2013 would be limited to colors and decals. If I was in the market for a new KLR I would definitely go for the "New edition" one. It's only $100 more than a regular 2014 and if the seat and suspension upgrades are any good, it would be well worth it since everybody seems to upgrade these two items anyway.

Catch 22 there though, is that you have to buy a 2014 which probably wont have any barter room built in.

Lol, doubt I helped much, but it's just my two cents. :bike:

If your riding mostly dirt and trails the XL is a fantastic bike, definitely more dirt oriented than the KLR. However, if your doing a lot of roadwork the XL can't hold a candle to the KLR. There's actually a good Youtube video comparing the two bikes.
Edit: Video is actually an XR650L vs a first gen KLR650.

I have had a 600XL Honda in the past and it is a great bike but I also agree....unless you are planning on mostly trails etc then it can't hold a candle to the KLR for road use of any kind. The KLR is truely the cheapman's adventure touring machine. Personally I would buy one before a more expensive BMW or KTM etc, just for the maintenance cost differences and schedules and ease of maintenances.....etc.

Again your money your ride.....enjoy.

06 klr 650

Well it looks like i'm getting the used 06 with 2,550 miles.This bike is in mint condition the owner was an elderly man,it was well taken care of.Looks like it is brand new.The dealer just serviced it and installed a new battery.I can't wait to get it!! I more excitied then when I bought my 09 klr.I'm looking forward to doing some improvements to it and going for a nice long ride.

i think you made a wise choice. If it makes you smile and you figure out reasons to ride or just mess with it, then you made the right choice.

Lot's of people bad mouth klr's b/c they don't get them or they "compare" them to things they are not. On the surface, for what it is, the klr is pretty tough to beat.

bike just delivered today from fla.I'm real happy with it 2555 miles looks like new

Wow that does look new, and 2,500 miles yeah that is still new I can put that on in a few weeks.

Sounds like a good find. I'll agree the older ones are more off-roadable just because of the ABS plastic vs the newer ones with the Sportbike hard plastic that can crack.

I probably buy an aftermarket plastic fuel tank to save weight, and to let it get beat up on. I know they cost a lot....but it would be worth it (probably recoup some of the cost by making it look new when you go to sell and put the OEM back on).

should I install a thermo-bob & what about the doohickey should i address it now or put some more miles on it?
