I have a 2014 NE and I run Heated Socks that take 2.2 amps and a jacket liner that draws 6.4 amps. For a total of 8.6 amps. Also a GPS that takes next to nothing so I'm not counting that. I want to add heated grips that draw "under 4 amps". That's 12.6 amps in "extra" loads. Still ok?

Personally, if I was going to try to run more than two things at a time, I would want to install a volmeter on the dash so I could see if I was depleting the battery faster than it was charging.

I read that post before I posted this one and according to that post, it looks like I have about 14 Amps left over for "my stuff". Both the Jacket and socks are on thermostats, so they "flash" power off and on again if not set on "high" but some days, they're on high a long time! Seems close but I guess I'd be OK? Voltmeter is a good idea but I have a hard enough time catching the turn signals flashing LOL!

I don't think so!
The Gen2 alternator puts out a maximum of 17 amps at 7000 rpm.
Do you spend much time at 7000 rpm?
Better figure about 3/4's output. If you over-work the alternator windings to 85-90% capability for sustained periods it will FAIL, EARLY!

So 17 x .75=12.75 amps, Reliably!

My best guess is the bike consumes about 9 amps while on Hi Beam.
And about 5 amps while on Low Beam.
I could be off by some, but just 'roughing it out'.

So now you can complete the math.

Maybe if Normk joins the thread, he will give you the definitive answer.

Heated clothing load.

I run my Gerbing heated liner, and gloves on my 2011 KLR. Only at idle does the voltage go down to low 12 volts plus. That's with brakes on, and low beam on.
If I crank engine up (just-a-little) it goes back up to 13 volts plus.

That's what I'm running too. Well.... sort of, if you exchange gloves for socks. Seems like it's an even trade. I'd just like to add heated grips too. Guess I'll "add" then "test" then "control as needed" and "if out of control" I'll upgrade stator as needed. Last bike (2009 KLR) had "A" or "B" switch for my jacket or wife's jacket. Never both. Now she's off the back so I might have to choose from my stuff and flip a switch as needed.

Gerbing

I have a Gerbing dual control on my setup. Most of the time I run the knobs at about mid way. If I get "wimpy" I may run 3/4.

Never had a problem at speed. If I get caught at idle for extended time, I just crank the knobs down, or run engine up a little.

I am in general agreement with pdwestman on this. At 4,000 rpm or so cruising speed on a gen2 KLR at best you would have about 7 amps on high beam and 11 amps on low beam for non stock accessories. Wattage calculations are usually based on rectifier voltage not battery voltage so that is around 100 to 150 watts at best. At lower speeds this would drop.

Keep in mind that you have to have some left to recharge the battery, so I would want to have a volt meter and back off the power usage if the voltage dropped below 13.8 volts.
