2014 KLR650 carby mode question(updated)

Hi everyone,

I have been thinking to do something on carburettor to make it better on long trips with load. Last time I rode the bike, was more than 10.000 km and it seemed to me too weak especially here in Australia KLR 650 is Learner bike.
I was thinking to do 22 cents mode till YouTube came up with another mode. Making bigger hole (1.5) in main jet at the bottom and cutting spring a bit on top of carburettor.
I have tried to find but I failed. Therefore, I apologise in advance if there is a thread regarding this.
My question is Has anyone tried this and is it okay to have it in this way on long trips?

7/64 INCHES (no COMMUNIST metric units, please!) is the appropriate hogged-out vacuum port diameter on the CVK40 (KLR650 carb).

Clipping slide spring coils changes the PRE-LOAD of the spring, but . . . actually makes the spring STIFFER than before. Thus . . . the throttle response (slide raising) may be better initially, but . . . at higher rpm and greater input air flow, slide response may be retarded.

Counter-intuitive? I know, but . . . shortening a spring raises the force required for deflection.

If you've disabled the "learner" mechanism on the carb, that's about all you're gonna get. Improving throttle response (the goal of the modifications you mention) won't increase your power, regardless of trip length.

What's a learner mechanism and where is it and who would even invent something so draconian? Actually I think the kickstand is a learner mechanism. Learns you how to drop your bike.

define "better" What are you looking for? Assuming you no longer have the extra "australian learner" holes in the slide that Paul and Damocles mentioned then you have three decent options (and no, drilling the main jet isn't one of them!);

- 1) Leave it alone. If you haven't done any other mods (i.e. airbox, silencer, etc.) then you don't have to do anything and the bike will run pretty good.

- 2) 22 cent mod; bandaid for the EPA carb jetting that helps with the factory low-mid throttle lean condition. should pull the snorkle at a minimum.

- 3) KLX jet kit from Eaglemike; the KLX (offroad version) jetting corrects the factory lean/rich mixture and gets the bike to run like it should. again, snorkle-ectomy at a minimum.

dfree, have you epoxied the 2 air vent holes on the upper side of the throttle slide just under the white plastic diaphragm retainer? This defeats the Australian LAMS feature & allows full power / full speed.

In Australia, there are bikes that restricted. after '14 z1000, klr650 is like turtle. Before anyone mentions, I absolutely know these are different type bikes. Just saying.

Dave, I haven't done those 2 holes yet. I was wondering if it works better than glueing holes. I meant "throttle reaction" because touring when its heavy, this learner restriction killed me 10000 km.
I might go for 22 cents but not jetkit etc. Thank you

Lastly, I decided to de-restrict slide without removing carby and that's it. Thank you so much

I discovered that those two holes already filled. I decided to remove plastic thing in airbox.
I rode 2001 klr650 in 2005 and remember it was way powerful than this bike. I am gonna try to find someone with klr in Sydney and see if it's same.
