I asked the same question and answer I got was "Its the same thing" so ordered the spring for a 18, and it works great. The feel of the bike is much better now.
Great. Thanks. I am still working the preload adjustment and getting familiar with the bike but a spring change may help.

Top Gun information may be 'a little bit fly by night'.

How can it be 'the same' when the Gen 3 has a Longer Swingarm, which has More leverage against the shock?

I'm sure that it is is still an 'improvement' for the heavier riders than I.

I live at the base of the Wind River Mtns of WY & have ridden in the Rocky Mountains of WY, CO, MT, ID for 34 seasons and have never found any need for a shock linkage guard on my KLR650.

But I recon that your guard will make use of that 'wart' / 'snaggle' on the bottom of your skid plate as an anchor point.

I would be interested in any information you have on spring and suspension upgrades for gen 3 klrs. I am not sure how much of the gen 2 info carries over to gen 3.

All of it.
Cogent!
Putting a stiffer spring on a crappy shock is not really an upgrade .
