Been reading for a few weeks and finally joined. Pretty helpful place here.

I bought 2012 with under 500 miles on it. Guy never even did first oil change. I have been putting some miles on the bike and ordered a few parts.

I bought the FMF Q4 and have been reading about 22 cent mod. Didn't realize I would have to rejet with this pipe so I've also read about switching to KLX needle and plan on using EM kit.

What I'm not sure about is if I do KLX needle mod do I still need to do the 22 cent mod?

The 22 cent mod is a cheap bandaid that works OK, the KLX kit does it up right. Get your kit from Eaglemike.com and follow the instructions.

I have an FMF Q4 on one of my KLR's with a KLX kit (142 main, 2nd clip, no washers under, 2 turns on the fuel screw) and it runs great.

Pull the snorkle from the airbox intake (it's very restrictive) and consider the "L-mod" or the typical 4 - 1" holes.

Cheers,
Dave

...so No, you don't need to do both. ;-)

and whilst I'm typing;

- watch the fragile plastic enricher nut

- be careful with the diaphram

- you don't NEED to drill the slide as indicated in the kit; it affects throttle response, not jetting.

Great thanks for all the input. I'll go ahead and order that today and just do all of it at one time. I've noticed my bike wants a smidge of choke on at all times or it will die so this should all clear up.

Like I said above it had only mileage and was ridden for just a few minutes each year and never even had first scheduled maintenance so I expected it would some basic attention.

I agree with Dave and maybe adjust the idle on the carb if you think the motor constantly calls for more gas..

Ok did KLX needle to suggested setting and drilled out the slide. Put on the FMF as well as crash bars and skid plate. Wow what a big difference, thx for all of the help.

My buddy and me did around 50 miles of the Dirt Devil since it is right around the corner. First off-road riding with this bike other than my yard. Have to admit a few of creek crossing made me nervous but we both made it through it fine. Next on the list is the TN section of the TAT or some kind of ride and camp. TBC...

You are in for a lot of fun. In your spare time on weekends you can knock out the Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas sections of the TAT. That will give you some good experience on ridding and camping and help you get your bike and your gear sorted out. Over 4th of July you could do Tennessee and Arkansas over Labor Day. Then when you get some vacation time you can go farther west.
