When I first purchased my 99 650, it had a tube coming out of the bottom of the air box that led into a filter, funnel shaped plastic piece. It has since fallen off. How important is this? I wasn't worried about it until I came across a post that said it is really important to plug it up? Why would the drain be there if it's safe to plug?

it's on the clean side so if it's missing you are ingesting unfiltered air which, depending on conditions, can destroy an engine in relatively short time.

I, and others, have plugged them off with no ill-effect......as far as why it's there? ....there are lots of parts that aren't strictly necessary for a variety of reasons; the little pce above the snorkle, the snorkle, itself, the inner fender, the chain "guard".....and some of us really crazy KLR owners remove the clutch and sidestand safety switches, vacuum petcock, etc. etc. ;-)

My 2nd KLR is bike #41 for me and the vast majority of my bikes haven't had any of the aforementioned bits, including the airbox drain.


all that said, there is no problem replacing the tube and catch container....make sure you also get the plug in the bottom

Thank you for the info. I'd like to plug mine up. Any suggestions on how you went about the this? ie: materials/strategies used to plug it up?

I'd not want to leave it open. Per DPelletier it's on the "clean" or what is supposed to be the clean side of the air filter. Leaving this fitting open defeats the definition of "clean."

My 2007 came with, and has a small transparent bulb at the bottom of the hose that comes from the Air Filter Housing. Every now and then I drain this bulb and it usually has an eye dropper of "liquid stuff" in it. I assume a mixture of oil from the air cleaner, fuel that gets spit back from the carburetor when the engine is shut off and water vapor that condenses in that area.

A common bolt or a pencil or stick could be used to plug the existing hose. The translucent 'bulb' just makes it easy to see IF Something could be drained From it.

For what it's worth, my "New Edition" (cringe) doesn't have the transparent "catch bottle", but instead has a translucent drain tube with a plastic plug on the bottom.

It catches the oil draining from the air filter, so that it can be re-used by thrifty KLR-istas!

Honestly, it was so long ago I don't remember.....I think I used a rubber cap and hose clamp but I'll check next time I'm routing around there.

KLR Kool-Aid, Sorry, that is incorrect!

The dirty air box drain does NOT have the hose in it. Just a nipple under the LH front corner of the foam air filter.

From that nipple it will drip on the front Inner lip of the rear fender, then onto the swingarm, then drip under the rear sprocket area. Which causes people to suggest the their rear wheel bearings are leaking.

Thanks for the correction - but now I'm also stumped! It seems to be coming from the air box, and was full of filter oil the last time I changed my air filter.

Where does the translucent drain tube with a plastic plug on the bottom originate, and what does it do?

Remove the rear brake fluid reservoir and have a look at the 2 nipples. The forward nipple should have the hose & a cap. The rearward nipple is normally just open or possibly a 'duck-billed' flapper valve like is above the drive chain.

As I recall the stock system had the tube and bulb hanging so low that it could easily get snagged on something and pulled off. I recommend keeping it short so that it does not hang below the engine.

I would not plug it permanently because occasionally you will find some gas, oil or water needing to be drained.
